French 19th Century Bureau A Cylindre
Dimensions: 43 1/2″H x 55 1/2″W x 29″D(38 1/4″D open)
French bureau cylinder roll-top desk which resembles a Bureau Mazarin or writing table. The interior has stacked selves over drawers in front of the work surface of green leather. A revolving cylinder part that comes down to hide and lock up the working documents when the desk is not in use. This particular desk has the desk surface sliding out a few inches to expand the available work area. Introduced to France in the first half of the 19th century. It is extremely difficult to produce a wooden cylinder section which does not warp over time – which ensures that such a desk was reserved for the wealthy. This desk has fine intricate hatched inlay, found all over the desk, the top with a brass heart pierced simi-surround, all original hardware.
