    A fascinating late 19th century stone garden statue of what is possibly a maenad holding and wearing grapes and a ram’s skin. The maenad, or bacchants of ancient Greco-Roman mythology were the attendants, servants and priestesses of the god of wine, Bacchus. This stone column which dates to circa 1890 features a female figure emerging from a static square based column. She has flowing hair encircled by garlands of grapes, an exposed breast, and is draped in the folds of a ram’s skin. Her eyes are pierced where once may have been inlay.     This stunning vitrine is dripping with antique elegance and character! Made in the style of Louis XVI in France circa early 1900’s. The incredible bookmatched veneer has gained a vibrant patina over the last more than a century. Although petite, every inch of this display case piece has been thoughtfully constructed. The top of the piece showcases a combination of dark wood and fruitwood inlay and chamfered corners that continue down the body of the piece. Lustrous, wonderfully detailed ormolu adornes the cornice; classic egg and dart, whimsical acanthus vines, and organic floral twist. The large scrolling vine ormolu is inset into the wood on three sides and features a face surrounded by sun rays above the front doors. We love the flirty design around the wavy original glass and twisted acanthus ormoulo between the doors. The interior houses three adjustable shelves and provides the perfect way to display. Sormani exhibited at the International Exhibitions in Paris and London winning numerous medals. Circa 1850.

    An antique French counter or grocer scale in ebonized hardwood and mahogany inlay with white marble top, circa 1880. The scale is made of hardwood, with each side having a thin inlaid rectangle of more lightly toned mahogany. Both front and back have a glass-front dial with a silver ring and decorative arrow pointers. This enables both the grocer and customer to see the scale’s measurement. The two plateaux are made of copper, which have taken a lovely, antique patina. The scale was manufactured by Trussant et Cie (Trussant & Co.) in Sainte-Livre, east of Bordeaux.
