  • French 19th Century Empire Mahogany Semainier

    A 19th century French Empire mahogany semainier featuring artful neoclassical hardware. Hand-crafted in France circa 1810, this semainier is fitted with seven drawers to provide a drawer of clothing or lingerie for every day of the week. A beautiful piece of subtly veined white marble sits atop this case piece’s rectilinear designed architectural body inspired by ancient Greek and Roman concepts. The top hidden frieze drawer sits below bold molding and is adorned with a large and lustrous brass winged neo-classical figure in its center. Beneath and flanked by finely turned columns with etched brass capitals and bases are the remaining six drawers that open easily and have working locks. One key is present. Each of the six drawers has sizable floral and foliate escutcheons and cast brass drawer pulls that feature gorgeous relief florals and grapes. The solid body is finished out with a plinth base and sturdy turreted feet. This elegant semainier is an excellent way to provide lots of storage without taking up alot of floor space, and it provides it with style.     A fine French Louis XVI style mantel mirror hand-crafted in France in the 19th century. The ornately carved giltwood frame is in excellent condition and is richly patinated. The frame is embellished with several bands of ornate high relief moldings including ‘twisted rope’ at its outer edge and a ‘string of pearls’ around the original mirror plate which is in great condition with just a bit of foxing. A beautifully designed mirror that would add elegance and texture to any room either placed on a mantel or atop a console table.     A French 19th century ash adjustable stool with a deep relief twisted-form central column that acts as the mechanism to adjust the height and three sturdy splayed legs.     This fantastic trumeau is the perfect combination of a piece that is just as artistic as it is functional. The worn slate gray paint has a tinge of blue and has gained a handsome patina. The large whimsical oil painting is encircled with low relief carving and topped with a tied ribbon. Done in organic tones with soft brush strokes, the scene depicts multiple groups of people enjoying a natural spring surrounded by dense forest. The square antique mirror plate is surrounded in the same fashion as the painting with floral dies in each corner and faux artichoke finials at the top. Gracing the space between the mirror and painting is a carved, detailed urn flanked with flowing ribbon and laurel swags.     A stunning Louis XVI style center table from 19th century France. The inset white marble top with striking green veining is in good antique condition. The gold gilt frame is incredibly carved; a bead perimeter borders the marble top and pierced designs of laurel wreaths and swags form the apron and continue down the legs in high relief. Rectangular legs finish with decorative feet and connect with the shaped stretcher. Dot and dash detailing on the shaped stretcher with a bell-like floral final in the center.     French two-handled ceramic barbotine asparagus dish of vibrant colors, c. 1870’s.  A favorite delicacy of Madame de Pompadour, asparagus or “points d’amour”  became de rigéur at the dinner table during the 18th century and continuing into the English Victorian era. The word “barbotine” refers to the thin clay paste used for making ceramic decorations in low relief.
