An interesting adjustable pole screen, from England, circa 1830. During the warmer months, when fireplaces were not in use, pole screens would hide or at least decorate unsightly, soot-filled fireboxes. A framed needlework depicting a pastoral scene with felled tree is supported by a mahogany pole that allows the screen to be moved up or down. The pole has a decorative turned end that rests on a mahogany tripodal base and showing some wear from use. An elegant antique work of art.

Antique Tapestries

Initially made for the dual function of decorating drab stone walls while also providing extra insulation against the cold, antique wall tapestries captivate us to this day. These works of art graced the walls of many castles, manors, and homes throughout England, France, and the rest of Europe from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. At Fireside Antiques, we have a wide range of Aubusson tapestries, English needlepoint tapestries, and Belgian tapestry panels.

Authentic Hand Woven Tapestries

Every tapestry is a piece of art that tells a story woven into its very fabric. First, there is the story depicted in the tapestry’s imagery, detailing some aspect of life at the time of its creation. Then there are the tapestry threads, which tell the story of who created the tapestry and its location at the time it was woven.

While machine-made tapestries have perfect stitching, even the most skilled craftsman will have uneven stitches, adding to the authenticity, uniqueness, and value of an antique tapestry. An antique tapestry made from hand-dyed cotton, linen, and wool offers much more charm than modern nylon or polyester equivalents. If a tapestry came from a well-to-do family, they might even include silk with inlaid gold or silver threads.

Many older tapestries depicting biblical figures or important battles are easy to replicate using today’s modern technology. Still, by examining the threads, sticking, colors, and even the weaver’s signature, it is easy to distinguish an original from a reproduction.

Why Purchase Antique Tapestries

Antique tapestries are essential pieces of textile art, depicting scenes from throughout history. As woven paintings, these tapestries provide a focal point to any living room or study, adding a sense of grandeur while keeping ancient history alive. Though modern tapestries can emulate the look of these pieces, there is no comparison to owning an authentic one.
