French 18th Century Solid Wine Press Pedestal

This wonderfully aged 18th century grape press screw – from a winery in France – has been converted into a pedestal with a circular top and octagonal base added later. The shaft would have driven a large stone wheel downward, crushing and squeezing grapes, forcing out their juice as the stone rotates across them. The production of wine is tantamount to French culture, and these larger-than-life screws made producing it en masse a possibility. This antique press, with its deep, rich patina and exceptional texture could be used as column supporting art or a plant or repurposed as a stunning floor lamp. An interesting part of 19th century history is brought back to life with this rare French cast iron pharmaceutical bottle corker circa 1870. We are reminded of the craft and tools used to bottle medicines in a 19th century apothecary or hospital by this wonderful corker beautifully crafted of wrought iron and specifically designed for ease of use. This tabletop piece of history is painted black and features an amber glass bottle and the original wooden lever handle. A maker’s or owner’s mark on the instrument’s side is hand pressed into the metal and reads “Systeme Decournial”. Endearingly rustic and quite sturdy, this corker perfectly embodies the time-honored tradition of preparing pharmaceuticals for fields of medicine near the turn of the century. A delightful 19th Century French gold-gilt barometer circa 1850. This early instrument of meteorology has been adorned with a molded and decoratively trimmed octagonal frame dotted with rosette and shell cartouche corners that has been painted gold gilt and features hand carved climbing bellflowers topped with a lovely carved shell motif. The face has hand-painted numbers, compass dial, and lettering framed by delicately painted leaf patterns.The antique glass and dial are intact. A gorgeous addition to any space this lustrous gold-gilt antique elevates a room’s status to the next echelon of style. The barometer is no longer in working order and has a timber crack across the dial. English 19th Century Maple and Co. Meat Platter

This stately 19th Century English porcelain meat platter features a scalloped rim, embossed deep draining channels, and is replete with basting well at one end. Raised upon integral feet to base. High gloss glaze overall with a decorative crane on the rim of the platter. On the reverse is the mark “Maple and Co. London” with imprinted numbering. Maple and Co. was one of the largest and most successful British furniture and decorative arts retailers in the late 19th Century. An additional imprint of a Caduceus, the registered trademark by Powell and Bishop, an English china and earthenware manufacturer (1876-1891) helps to date this piece to the Edwardian era. In excellent antique condition with minimal wear. This decorative serving plate of generous proportion is ready to display or serve today and will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
