English Early 20th Century Bloomsbury Folding Screen
$4,400.0096"H x 95"W x 0.75"D
Dimensions: 96” H x 95” W x ¾” D
English, early 20th century hand-painted folding screen in the style of the Bloomsbury Group, circa 1910-1930. This collective of artists, authors, and other intellectuals were sometimes infamous but very prolific in their output, even opening up a storefront named Omega Workshops where this incredible screen may have been purchased. Its four identical panels–all handpainted–replicate the same stylized images of foliate, figural, and Neoclassical themes that layer into an arresting tableau of diverse references that beg for a narrative to be strung together. The color palette features a teal border with fine, black foliate pattern dotted at the corners with a yellow buttercup; a pale yellow background over which thin foliate vines have been painted; a cartouche at the top filled with a dagger-carrying female figure; additional bust figures at the midsection, and urns with anthemion motif anchoring the lower third. The panels can be positioned to use as a self-supporting room divider or privacy screen, even mounted to the wall as a mural; the reverse side does show evidence of prior water damage and discoloration. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Each panel: 96” H x 23 ¾” W x ¾” D

Dimensions: 1 ¼” H x 11 ¾” W x 11 ¾” D

Dimensions: 10 ⅜” H x 16 ⅝” W x 1 ½” D

French 19th Century Raised Embroidery of Madonna & Child
$2,800.0050.75"H x 36.13"W x 1.38"D
Dimensions: 50 ¾” H x 36 ⅛” W x 1 ⅜” D
An impressive work of textile art, this French 19th century raised gold embroidery of the Madonna & Child resembles liturgical vestments such as a cope or chasuble that a member of the clergy would wear to mass, applying the same techniques and quality to a more static image set within a wood frame. The appliqués are mounted on ivory silk with a moiré pattern that gives the illusion of faux bois, shifting and rippling in the light along with the metallic threads. Mary and the Christ child are rendered with handpainted faces and hands that achieve the kind of tenderness observed in Italian Renaissance art; they are wrapped in robes with a variety of textures & stiches to indicate the depth of gathered folds of fabric, including gold sequins, as she holds the child safely over the embroidered red serpent around her feet. The figural vignette is contained within orphrey or orfoi embroidered border of foliate and floral theme in gold, green, pale blue and red. Delicate, scrolling vines grow outward from the textile border across the negative space of ivory silk toward the ebonized, carved wood frame protecting the delicate work. Anything you find beautiful enough to put on the wall can be considered wall décor, so it’s a prime opportunity to show off your design chops while personalizing your home far beyond the simple selection of furniture and textiles. For instance, a ceramic wall planter gives the room a small hint of green life, while a framed metallic op art creates a completely different atmosphere. From delicate wrought iron to painted wood panels, your perfect wall complements the room it’s in by giving a fresh inflection to the unique individual story you’re already telling with your décor.
How to Choose Antique Wall Decor
When choosing antique wall décor, you want to focus on materials, color and shape, and era. Painted or sculptural birds, plants, and other natural denizens are a sign that you want to bring the outdoors in, while painted historical portraits can make yesterday sing.
Textiles soften, while bronze or wrought iron metalwork tells a more intense and subtle story. Bringing a China or platter plate creates a homelike atmosphere, and neoclassical plasterwork like columns or portraits can create a luxe, rich setting for your favorite things.
Your home isn’t a museum, but it is filled with beautiful things, each with its own story. What better way is there to show them off?
Shop Antique Wall Decor
Whether it’s South Asian doors in the den, oversized flatware or a chicken-rooster theme in the kitchen, or antique guitars on the living room walls, your rooms can say so much more with the addition of antique wall décor.
For example, mid-century stylized seagulls or orthographic designs can evoke any era, from the recent past to a long ago and far away. Additionally, Neo-classical sconces with gilded or bronze scenes make for a much different ambiance from swords and metalwork, while angelic elements like finials or carvings hint at the personality behind the art.
Handcrafted wooden sculptural elements, rustic wooden paneling, or Louis XVI patinated doors and windows all create entirely different worlds for your furnishings to live in. Whatever your personal style, you are sure to find the perfect antique wall décor.
