Shop Antique Daybeds
Antique daybeds are adaptable, refined, and practical. They can serve as a site for sleeping as well as lounging. They are a sophisticated choice for guestrooms or use in children’s bedrooms. A daybed can serve two key decorative purposes: to be a quality addition to an already adorned room or the focal point around which the rest of a room revolves.
Our Antique Daybeds
There are vintage retro daybeds out there and brand-new contemporary ones, but among all these options, a high-quality antique daybed stands out. At Fireside Antiques, we house a continually updated collection of daybeds from the 19th and 20th centuries, all of European origin.
Some feature classic designs that resemble a bed frame, whereas others are more reminiscent of a chaise lounge. Styles include directoire, neoclassical, and renaissance revival, and materials range from beautiful wood to painted metal.
Some daybeds, such as many 19th century French options, are gorgeously ornate. These are bold pieces that you can design an entire room around. Others are more subtle while still making an indelible impact on a space.
A Daybed Style for Every Room
Some daybeds are designed to function as a bed. These are often placed in an office or study in a home that does not have a guest room so that visitors have a comfortable and private place to spend the night. Daybeds have also been an increasingly popular choice for children’s rooms, especially those with limited space. All on their own, day beds can provide a bold accent.
Other daybeds may work better as lounges in a den or living room. They are often enjoyed as a cozy reading nook or spot to curl up by the fireplace on a winter day.
Ancient Origins
Daybeds originated in Greece several centuries ago. Unlike couches or sofas today, which are often a place to sit with family or friends, the daybed began as a place to lie down in or outside of the bedroom. In the 1600s, these daybeds later inspired the creation of the chaise lounge, another relaxing spot to recline.
