English 19th Century Chimney Pot

A remarkable Victorian-era English terracotta chimney pot. This antique architectural element serves as both decorative and functional additions to traditional chimney flues. During the 1800s, coal was used more and more to heat homes, however the smoke that it produced was thick and toxic. Heightening one’s chimney increases its draw, removing this unwanted pollutant from interiors more quickly. Multiple indoor fireplaces was a luxury afforded to those with means, and these toppers would often be indicative of an estate’s socioeconomic status. The more intricately designed pots were more expensive and therefore prized by those that wished to project their wealth by ornamenting their homes with beautiful embellishments to their fireplace smokestacks. The worn black and white paint adds so much character to the design. Most were not painted, making this one particularly stylish. One of the crown’s tines have been lost, adding to its antique charm. Today, they can still function as intended, however their excellent patination and form make for exceptional garden ornaments and/or decorative objects.

French Vintage Carved and Painted Louis XVI-style Queen Bed

Painted a creamy gray color, this vintage bed is made in the French Louis XVI style and features many of the stylistic details of that period. Pomegranate finials cap the turned and twisted columns found at the bed’s four corners. These columns flank the head and footboards and feature roseated joinery die – a hallmark of Louis XVI furniture – as well as foliate and acanthus carvings. The head and footboards have been upholstered in a new taupe fabric with double-welt cording. Their frames have a twisted ribbon and twisted acanthus leaf ribbon motif details, as well as leaf and berry stylings found upon them. It accommodates a standard queen mattress and will become an heirloom that can be handed down across generations to come. The foot board measures 34”H.

French Louis XVI Style Painted Wardrobe

A beautiful wardrobe, made in France at the turn of the 20th Century, in the style of Louis XVI. Painted in a neutral, taupe color, blue painted accents grace many trimmed surfaces and raised appliques. Intricately carved details have been incorporated into almost every facet of this painted case antique. The crown boasts egg and dart, carved tulip and sunflower motifs that are linked by arcaded beaded garlands. A long mirror – featuring its original beveled glass – has a shapley top and fronts a door that conceals a large storage cavity, equipped with four adjustable shelves. A decorative plaque can be found below showcasing a knotted ribbon and garland swag. This door can be secured thanks to a functional locking mechanism. To its right is a smaller, lockable compartment which is also outfitted with a single adjustable shelf. Its door has a beveled glass panel, with a shape matching the mirrored door, that is clear and currently outfitted with fabric curtains behind. Beneath is a large cubby set atop a bank of four narrow drawers. A wide, bottom drawer spans the width of the entire wardrobe and provides even more out-of-sight storage. Swedish 19th Century Painted Corner Cabinet

The single drawer facade features stunning floral ormolu details around the key-hole. One key is included to open the flush drawer and reveals a pre-sectioned interior, making it easier to organize personal items like jewelry or ties. The frieze section is supported by columnar front legs with ormolu capitals and bases, with the whole elevated on bun-feet. This is an English 19th century terracotta rhubarb forcer for the garden. A rhubarb forcer is a bell-shaped pot with a lidded opening at the top, used to cover rhubarb to limit photosynthesis. They encourage the plant to grow early in the season and also produce blanched stems. The pots are placed over two- to three-year-old rhubarb crowns during winter or very early spring. Once shoots appear the lid is taken off, causing them to grow towards the light. This one no longer has a cover. It would be great in a garden to protect other plants or as a conversation piece.

English 19th Century Painted Hall Bench

An amazing painted hall bench – teeming with charm – from 19th century England. The large antique has panels with diagonally oriented wooden slats which were painted green many decades ago. The frame is finished in a dark/black paint that can still be found about the weathered wood. The seat has been left in its natural state, and a comfortable seat it is! Two drawers are hung from the bench’s bottom which have also had their fronts painted green. Their metal hardware has been painted as well. The front legs and front arm posts have been turned, and along with the rest of the bench’s frame, has patinated marvelously over the years, contributing to the bench’s overall antique, English charm. c. 1880. Seat height: 17-1/4″H.
