    This Dutch trumeau is a fantastic find! Crafted during the 1790’s, it retains its original mercury mirror plate within a perfectly worn, painted frame. A beautiful depiction of a toga-wearing woman floating among the clouds tops the mirror and is flanked by columns. Two tiny hooks are fixed beside the columns, making it doubly functional in any interior.     This fantastic trumeau is the perfect combination of a piece that is just as artistic as it is functional. The worn slate gray paint has a tinge of blue and has gained a handsome patina. The large whimsical oil painting is encircled with low relief carving and topped with a tied ribbon. Done in organic tones with soft brush strokes, the scene depicts multiple groups of people enjoying a natural spring surrounded by dense forest. The square antique mirror plate is surrounded in the same fashion as the painting with floral dies in each corner and faux artichoke finials at the top.     This Swedish Empire style trumeau exudes a simple refinement in its symmetry and composure. A simple pediment sits atop a painted black and decorative gilt cornice.     This fabulous Swedish mirror is dripping in bold details, circa 1870. “Eglomise” mirrors have been painted on the reverse side to reveal an image from behind the glass. The frame is painted with a base coat of gilt and accentuated by carved details painted in black surround the mirror. It is supported by mahogany columns that have brass capitals and bases, capped with spherical finials. The surface of the vanity table is white marble that is in good, antique condition. A single lockable drawer is housed in the apron which has an ormolu escutcheon plate flanked by additional brass ormolu mounts to the outer edges.     This is a massive French 19th Century mirror from the main hall of the Archbishop Palace Rouen, Normandy, France.  This mirror is over 10’ tall and more than 6’ wide.  Both the frame and mirror show aging.  The original mercury mirror plate has oxidized, creating an undeniable detail in this antique mirror.  The lines on this mirror fall where wood support pieces meet on the back of the mirror.  We can assume over a period of time, moist air flowing through the spaces behind the mirror caused the mercury to oxidize and flake off the glass.

    An exceptional carved and painted trumeau mirror, circa 1800, France. The antique mirror features a large carved and gilt wreath that is situated in the larger shaped panel above the glass. It consists of carved and blossoming roses on one side, with a laurel branch on the other, meeting in the middle at a carved knotted ribbon with tassels. Below this wonderful work of art is the trumeau’s mirror. The mirror is nearly square, measuring 17”H x 18-½”W, and is framed by  carved and gilt trim, worked into twisted ribbon and beaded pearl motifs. The mirror’s mercury glass is original to the antique, and has aged marvelously, with some foxing and sparkles present. A small, carved rectangular panel resides beneath the mirror.

Across the top of the frame is a Neoclassical, foliate motif with scrolled design on the corners. Surrounding the glass is a gadroon pattern of curved ridges like one might find on silver or brass tableware, carved to high-relief.     A spectacular English 19th century bullseye mirror with etched plate. Sometimes referred to as a sorcerer’s or witch’s mirror, this example has seven small convex mirrors arranged in a circle, bubbling up from the (square) mercury glass plate. This technical feat of glass-making creates a distorted reflection but also one that is repeated seven times to give the sense of an all-seeing eye, hence the association with the supernatural. Auspicious symbols of flowers, leaves, and curled tendrils that have been artfully etched into the glass to relieve any doubts about the good intentions of this mysterious mirror.     This elegant French Empire mahogany cheval floor mirror, c. 1800’s, retains the original glass and features a rectilinear mahogany frame which can pivot to adjust the angle or reflection. The panel is suspended from round columns surmounted by carved urn finials, lifted off the floor by cabriole-style feet (bearing a strong visual reference to horses) raised on brass casters to move about as needed. The whole is accented with gilt-brass mounts of rosettes and anthemion motifs typical of the Empire style. The wood glows with excellent color and grain pattern recently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the historic character.
