An early 20th-century gilt framed oil on canvas painting by French artist Jean Didier-Tourné (1882-1967), depicting a lean, mustached male nude in a kind of contraposto stance as he turns away from the viewer in silhouette. The background palette is deliberately muted that obscures the paintings on the wall behind him, creating a horizon line at the middle contrasting the gray-green upper against a burnt sienna below. His pale body is not only a figure study of human anatomy but one of shadow & light as the muscles are illuminated. Overall the minimal composition is captivating for its tense juxtapositions. Framed by a gold gilt molding with thin reeded design. Signed on the front with additional text on the back to place in context of Rome circa 1911. French vintage portrait by Belgian artist Edmond Delescluze (1905-1993). The subject is a slender young woman with tousled black hair in a strapless blue dress, her strong features unflinching and concentrated toward the right of the scene. Behind her is a curious assortment of objects: a carousel horse, a blue vase with flowers, a blue lidded jar and two framed pieces of art above the bed that beg for a narrative to be strung together to tell her story. An arresting oil on canvas portrait by the French artist Albert Coste, signed and dated 1943. The subject, a sophisticated woman of a certain age and fair complexion, is illuminated by the sun coming in from the nearby window, forming a corona of her hair as she sits in a blue bergere by an open secretary desk. She stops her correspondence to indulge the artist by sitting for this portrait, her left hand (note the red fingernails matching the red of her lips) holding a book. Her right arm rests on the manchette of the chair, as her fingers delicately touch the cheek. Recently framed in natural oak molding that complements the palette.
