A funky set of six (6) French dining chairs from circa 1970, easily fitting a Midcentury Modern/Scandinavian taste for gentle curvature that is most importantly both comfortable and inviting. Likely designed by the firm of Baumann, the armless chair frames of beech wood are thick and flat in profile, suspending the backrest at the top and a wide, slightly concave seat in between. What appears to be the original upholstery is a checked velvet of alternating beige and rosy pink that is in worn, but acceptable condition for the age and use. This magnificent vintage bookcase is a demonstration of French craftsmanship intersecting with 20th century design tastes in the manner of Charles Dudouyt, bridging 19th century Arts & Crafts traditions with the graphic, modern styling popular since Art Deco. Made from solid oak, the wood has a warm color and patina that highlights the natural grain and depth of the wood. The upper section is a series of open shelves, allowing for the display of books, trophies, heirlooms and other collections. Three upper shelves (10 ¼” deep) are solid planks, adjustable on sawtooth brackets to reconfigure as needed while the lowest shelf is fixed. Pilasters framing the openings of the shelves have fluted carvings terminating in a geometric motif like a colon. The lower body projects slightly beyond the upper section, and is organized into two shallow drawers nearly hidden above two pairs of paneled doors enclosing the undivided cabinet. Interior shelf measures 13 ⅝” deep. Look closely to appreciate the unique shape of the paneling on the six doors. All these features result in a bookcase that is distinguished but not imposing, characterized by thoughtful lines, a creative spirit, and substantial scale. Ideal for a library, office, or living room, this bookcase combines functionality with the sophistication of French antique furniture, making it a versatile and beautiful addition to any space. This vintage commode from France honors Louis XV period details and Provincial charm made with 20th century finishes which have given the classic storage piece a fresh look befitting more modern tastes. A serpentine-edge top surface has been faux-finished to appear like stone, with the warm colors and fine pattern of alabaster. On the storage case below, the French-gray paint (in a hue reminiscent of lichen) is brushed with khaki undertones for a patinated-organic effect, trimmed with the now faint remains of a painted gilt which highlight the floral-foliate carvings that give visual interest to the paneling on the drawer fronts. Metal drop handles are mounted with unique, quatrefoil backplates matching the fleur-de-lis design to the far edges of the drawers. Condition is very good with some wear to the red leather-bound cover; the gilded edges of the pages have dulled; some foxing of the paper, otherwise the plates are still vibrant to enjoy. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. The wood cylinder is dotted by what remains of the floral and foliate brass stamp that would have printed a design onto paper, with other traces of the original illustration wrapping around the column. The lamp riser is an ebonized (painted) disc to not distract from the subtlety of the design. Fabulous vintage French dining table of circa 1970, carved from a unique block of Moroccan marble populated by the fossilized remains of a variety of marine life. Dagger-shaped belemnite fossils (dating to at least 65 million years old) are scattered in random arrangement across the oblong slab of stone that forms the table top, mixing with the traces of nautilus spirals and thin ribbons of burnt orange veins in the otherwise light-brown marble that has been polished to reveal all of the nuanced character. Balancing the top is a sculptural pedestal base in an hourglass silhouette, cleaved in the center to form a narrow void and flaring out at the floor in a rectangle for stability. The excitement of the fossilized inclusions makes this table a unique conversation piece for guests to admire while dining, that may also ground the room when used as a center table. A fantastic industrial workbench from France, early to mid-20th century, assembled from a heavy steel case with a thick wood top surface that would allow this piece to become a unique kitchen island infused with authenticity for the modern interior. Using only three boards (likely beech), the wood reflects decades of merciless patina inflicted upon the resilient planks: holes, chop marks, bits of metal, and layers of paint to name a few, resulting in an engaging, tactile quality. In the case below–equally patinated to reveal layers of blue and cool mint green paint–are three distinct compartments for display and storage: an open shelf to the left which can be accessed on either side, and two cabinets with angled handles that may have originally had locks. Note that the left cabinet is fitted with brackets to support a shelf. Folded steel plates for legs elevate the case to a comfortable height to work and prep, leaving the floor open (perfect for accessing outlets and other utilities) underneath. Within a shield-shaped label is “VNG Arcoe” for a now unfamiliar herb, perhaps a translation of Pau d’Arco harvested in South America.
