A pair of silver plated French candelabras made into bouillotte lamps with new black metal shades. Bouillotte is a card game that became popular in France during the 18th & 19th centuries. For light, they would use a bouillotte lamp. These silver plated lamps are beautiful showcasing a well patinated finish with touches of verdi gris. They also feature repeating neoclassical patterns, les perles, and 4 candelabra arms with faux wax candle covers. In the past as bouillotte candles would burn down one would use a key, where the shade connects the middle shaft, to lower the shade as the candles went down to allow the players to be free of glare. Recently rewired by a professional for the US using UL listed parts.

Just underneath is another more visible top drawer with polished brass lion’s head pulls and striking brass shield escutcheons that feature paired griffons. These stylized escutcheons follow down to be found on the bottom drawers and one key is included for all five functioning locks. Under both top drawers the front of the desk folds forward to reveal a work area inset with vibrant orange leather elegantly detailed with gold tooling. The leather is in great antique condition making this a comfortable place to work. When open, you can see the theatre is equipped with five drawers with round brass sunburst pulls and a large open cubby partitioned with arches and columns with the center housing carved stairs that can be removed to reveal a private storage space. A smooth space in the bottom center holds a plaque engraved with “JEAN D’ESPOUY” in all caps which signifies that the frame held work by artist Jean d’Espouy (1891-1921), a known French painter and watercolorist who exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais starting in 1910.
