French 19th Century Set of 3 Hand-carved Marble Corbels
$6,500.0038.25"H x 8"W x 6.50"D
Dimensions: 38 ¼” H x 8” W x 6 ½” D
French 19th century–or earlier–ensemble of three hand-carved stone corbels. They are substantial pieces, likely used as decorative supports or architectural elements around a fireplace or softening the geometry of a roofline. It is truly extraordinary how the artist has decorated these elongated panels with naturalistic floral and leaf designs–which include roses, lilies, sunflowers, and ivy–rendered in tactile softness that belies the density of the stone. Outside of an architectural function, the grouping could be displayed in one’s home like stela from the ancient world: sculptural markers to guide the way or commemorate a significant event. Italian Pair of 19th Century Giltwood Appliqués
$8,400.0033.25"H x 15"W x 4.50"D
Dimensions: 33 ¼” H x 15” W x 4 ½” D
A stunning pair of Italian 19th century giltwood wall appliqués–decorative elements to enhance the architectural program–likely obtained from a church or cathedral as they are flat and unfinished on the backs, intended to be viewed from front. The Eternal Flame urn forms are handcarved with stunning Neoclassical motifs and textures that not only conveys the power of the church but also the lasting influence of the Empire shaped by Napoleon’s vision. At the top of each urn is a textured, waving flame that would have been illuminated by candlelight to magnify its aura. Pairs of eagle heads–iconic symbols of the period–are mounted on each side of the urn’s shoulder with an amber glass rosette embedded in between them. Festooned swags emphasize the curvature and fullness of the urn which is revisited again where the form tapers toward the base as fluted carvings mixed with additional floral-foliate references unifying the exuberance of the design. Block feet painted the color of red bole elevate the urns to stabilize them on a table or mantel. Note that evidence of wax is still visible on the backsides, confirming their historic age. French Vintage Reproduction Parthenon Frieze Panel
$5,800.0042.25"H x 59.38"W x 4"D
Dimensions: 42 ¼” H x 59 ⅜” W x 4” D
The Parthenon, that postcard image from the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, was once a great temple of white marble and a staggering program of sculptures from floor to ceiling to enhance the architecture. Built in the 5th century BCE for the goddess Athena, the structure is mostly in ruins now with its treasures lost, looted, or held in the collections of major museums. This relief is a 20th century French reproduction by the Atelier de Moulage du Louvre, the plaster casting workshop at the Louvre in Paris, of one section of the pictorial frieze that wrapped around the interior structure. Originally this frieze measured over 500 linear feet, telling a narrative about a procession toward the Acropolis involving many distinct characters, these two horsemen included. In this particular frame two men on horseback make their way to the temple, note the animal hide draped on the rider to the right side with two clawed feet waving as they gallop along. Stamped on the left-facing edge by the Atelier de Moulage du Louvre. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
French Neoclassical Bronze Tazza of Cupid and Venus
$1,285.006.13"H x 18.13"W x 12.25"D
Dimensions: 6 ⅛” H x 18 ⅛” W x 12 ¼” D
Late 19th century French tazza, cast in heavy bronze with exquisite level of detail in every curve. In the center of the crater is a depiction of Venus and her child, Cupid, whose motherly love has been rendered in touching detail. The central figures appear against a smooth background ringed by a laurel wreath, with Greek script to the side of each figure, which may offer more insight once translated. Mounted on each side of the tazza are elaborately decorated handles featuring scrolls, heads of rams, and an ominous face. Neoclassical influences are carried through the base and legs, down to the clawed feet on pads resting on the table. No visible hallmarks, likely contemporary with Ferdinand Barbedienne (the foundry) and Ferdinand Levillain the sculptor.
