French 18th Century Tapestry Fragment in Molded Frame
$2,995.0015.38"H x 42.75"W x 0.75"D
Dimensions: 15 ⅜” H x 42 ¾” W x ¾” D

Hand-woven by a workshop in the 1700s, this amazing tapestry fragment features a lush floral display surrounding a crowned crest flanked by two birds. Dense needlework covers the olive green velvet background that remains in wonderful antique condition. There is an abundance of dimensional embroidered flowers in earthy colors. Many of the navy, burgundy, forest green, and yellow silk threads have not lost their luster. Throughout are sewn deep red seed beads. Scrolling corded vines and serpentine branches outlined in metallic thread create a lively display. Tapestries were produced in large sizes, usually to cover walls for warmth and decoration. The tapestry of which this fragment originated, most likely did not survive the centuries. This may have been one of the most decorative and symmetrical sections.
