English 18th Century Ebonized Oak Carved Chest

An extraordinary 18th century oak chest of drawers, it is of striking color and form to display in any room of the home not limited to clothing storage. The five drawers are finely carved with low-relief acanthus designs that scroll across the fronts, animating the panels with near perfect symmetry. Drawers glide easily using the slender brass drop handles; note the keyhole escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Bulbous bun feet elevate the dark case from the floor. Here is an outstanding example of English craft blending with the flourish one might expect of Italian or French furniture of similar age. The seven drawers feature stunning bookmatched fronts of radiating grain patterns that feel cohesive and expansive; they also share a key between the lower six drawers to secure the functioning locks. An extraordinary Italian walnut commode from the 19th century, Neoclassical in style, decorated with a graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that creates movement and definition over the exterior. The surface uses two, beautiful planks shaped to chamfered corners and outlined around the edges with a sawtooth pattern of inlay in contrasting light/dark tones. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Each drawer opens by ring pull hardware; note the escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. The side panels have inlaid designs complementary to those on the drawer fronts so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. A gorgeous 19th century French walnut chest of drawers–eight drawers to be exact-designed as a classic Louis Philippe commode with spellbinding patterns in the matched wood grain. The top surface is rounded at the corners and wrapped with narrow pieces of the burled walnut to begin the “waterfall” effect that leads the eye from one drawer to the next. A frieze drawer on the very top of the stack no longer has a functioning lock, but is easily opened by gently grabbing the corners. The six drawers in the middle of the case feature stunning bookmatched fronts of radiating grain patterns that feel cohesive and expansive; they also share a key between them to secure the functioning locks. One additional drawer in the base is nearly hidden except for the keyhole that does not lock. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax. An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. A French Empire three-drawer commode from the 19th century with its original marble top. A more recent artistic update by a Caribbean-blue painted finish complements the gilt bronze accents, for exciting contrasts in textures and tones. The top surface of dark, nearly black stone is dotted with the fossilized remains of ancient marine animals, among the curious patterns of marbleization. Note that the stone displays the expected patina of scratches and other signs of the commode’s historic age so please view the image gallery for more details. A pair of gilt bronze caryatid busts top the inverted pilasters which flank the stack of three, wide drawers that open by brass lion ring pulls. Escutcheons on each drawer front are purely decorative, no key is present, but their ornate wing motifs underscore the mythical and fantastic inspiration the Empire taste is known for. Contrasting slate blue paint has been applied as a decorative border around the drawer hardware and defines the pilasters further, which draws the eye downward to the wonderful paw feet at the floor. The matte paint remains mostly smooth with some areas of mottled craquelure. Cleaned and tightened, this antique is ready for your interior.
