French 19th Century Mahogany Empire Enfilade with Marble Top
$7,995.0041.75"H x 64.25"W x 20.88"D
Dimensions: 41 ¾” H x 64 ¼” W x 20 ⅞” D
A magnificent 19th century French enfilade of classic Empire styling, made of richly figured mahogany adorned with gilt bronze accents. Its original marble top of black stone is speckled with tiny, fossilized inclusions underneath the expected scratches from time and use. In the overhanging frieze below, a row of three drawers open by hidden cupped handles along the bottom edge (the keyholes are only decorative without a key present). The case is animated by abstract, swirling grain patterns of the wood in those luminous brown tones mahogany is prized for. In the storage compartment of the case one finds a wide cabinet behind the left and center doors opened by gripping the pillar in the absence of a key. A narrow cabinet to the right side opens by using the key as a pull. Both sections contain a semi-adjustable shelf, 13 ½” deep for ample storage in a dining room or foyer. Two thick columns to the sides–detached from the case–are mounted with gilt bronze capitals and bases that further underscore the Empire taste for Greco-Roman architecture. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax this showstopping storage piece is ready for your interior. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. An elegant storage piece for a dining room or foyer, this 20th century Louis XVI style enfilade captures the refinement of the period in timeless finishes like marble and mahogany. Three rectangular drawers in the frieze easily open by ring-pull hardware, flanked on the sides by reeded brass panels at the top of the legs. In the main body, three paneled doors in flamed mahogany veneer outlined in brass trim enclose the compartments. Each contains fixed shelves: two narrow cabinets on the left and right (15 ¼” deep), and a wide cabinet in the middle (16” deep). A little apron hangs below the center door, enhanced by a linear, floral appliqué of gilt bronze. Three keys included for the working locks. Fluted, tapered feet elevate the piece from the floor giving it a sense of lightness in spite of the grand scale. Swedish 19th Century Painted Linen Press
$3,200.0078.25"H x 53.13"W x 21"D
Dimensions: 78 ¼” H x 53 ⅛” W x 21” D
A Swedish pine buffet à deux corps (that is, a cabinet on chest in two sections) with origins in the 18th century designed with features and style that suit many decorating tastes and storage needs for the modern interior. The cabinet reflects that vibrant red tone of Gustavian antiques, having been made in the 1700s, which displays charming hand-painted faux bois wood grain in the shaped panels of the door fronts. Inside are two long shelves like a linen press, over six smaller drawers that open easily by iron ring pulls. The unpainted wood displays exciting movement and color in the grain. The base section of a three drawer commode appears younger than the upper cabinet, married in the early 19th century. Three drawers use turned knobs to glide easily making this a wonderful storage option for a number of rooms around the home. Gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve all the historic character, ready for your interior. We believe this item to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Dimensions: 38 ¾” H x 60 ⅝” W x 16” D
A spectacular cabinet/credenza from England circa 1850, displaying many of the audacious characteristics as the Third Empire style of France within the same time period. Quarter-round cabinets on the left and right have full visibility through curved glass doors to view the contents arranged on velvet-lined shelves. Behind the locking door at center adorned with a marquetry cartouche, the interior is also lined in a worn velvet which wraps around a single shelf, 11 ¾” deep. The whole is raised on a plinth base. Dimensions: 90 ½” H x 39 ½” W x 27” D
This striking corner cabinet from 19th century Sweden is all hand-built and painted with those characteristic details so desirable of Gustavian antiques. The ethereal blue-gray paint is original to the piece and contributes a wonderful patina to harmonize in a number of interior styles. A unique cornice tops the whole, with an angular pediment flanked by scrolled projections on the corners. Fluted details add further depth to the raised panels of the cabinet doors, which are interrupted by a perfect circle in the middle. Inside the (unpainted) pine upper cabinet are three shelves, and the door is secured by a simple wood latch. The small opening at the waist is similarly unpainted, framed by a decorative archway that creates a small niche to store & display. The bottom pine cabinet holds a single shelf, its door secured by a rather primitive latch. Make sure to view the detailed images to get a closer look at this special piece. When measuring your corner, the back sides of the cabinet are 28” along each wall.
Italian 18th Century Painted Buffet
$7,895.0037"H x 69"W x 20"D
Dimensions: 37” H x 69” W x 20” D
An endearing 18th century Italian hand-painted buffet that departs from the strong visual codes of the Baroque period adopting the relaxed manner of Louis XV and Gustavian polychrome furniture. The tone-on-tone blue cabinet is fitted with two doors on the front side, in between nicely canted corners interrupted by narrow, paneled sections filled with abstract gradients of blue in reference to the sky. The upper surface is a dark slate whereas the majority of the exterior is cerulean. Central panels on the doors have been treated as a cartouche for artistic expression to illustrate what appears to be the casting out of Adam & Eve from the garden of Eden and their circumstances following. A twist of the turned knob on either door opens to reveal a divided interior of two sections each with a shelf, 16 ⅝” deep. Above each door is a small drawer using Chinoiserie/Chippendale drop pulls, repeated again on the wide drawer that spans the front. Large, turned bun feet elevate the case from the floor. In contrast to the ebonized exterior, the back and shelves of the interior have been painted an ethereal blue-gray to further illuminate and highlight the contents. The doors open by working lock and key to reveal an interior fitted with two shelves, 13 ¾” deep. French 19th Century Solid Oak Buffet à Deux Corps
$5,600.0099.75"H x 57.75"W x 24.75"D
Dimensions: 99 ¾” H x 57 ¾” W x 24 ¾” D
A French solid oak buffet à deux corps from the 19th century, Louis XV in style, with baroque carvings to add depth to the paneled doors, and serpentine apron that together give this large storage piece its historic character. Under the linear crown is a stylized garland carved into the frieze over a pair of doors that mirror each other’s calligraphic outline around the paneling. Each door hangs on steel barrel hinges to support the weight, and use scrolling hardware that coordinates beautifully with the vine and foliate motifs elsewhere. The doors open by working lock and (massive) key to reveal an interior that has been crudely tacked with the most charming floral printed cotton in bold red & white. Three shelves range in depth from 13 ¼”-14 ¾”. In the lower cabinet–protruding forward beyond the upper body–past a working lock and key is an interior fitted with a single shelf, 18 ⅜” deep. The same textile has been used to dress the back of the cabinet as well–see the image gallery for the immersive effect this has when all the doors are open! The sinuous lines of the swelled apron transition into carved escargot feet, another signature of the Louis XV taste for refined, yet playful touches. From its graceful curves to robust proportions and charming patina, this Louis XV armoire will bring a comforting presence to any home. It has been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax to be ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition. Two keys included.
