A remarkable Victorian-era English terracotta chimney pot. This antique architectural element serves as both decorative and functional additions to traditional chimney flues. During the 1800s, coal was used more and more to heat homes, however the smoke that it produced was thick and toxic. Heightening one’s chimney increases its draw, removing this unwanted pollutant from interiors more quickly. Multiple indoor fireplaces was a luxury afforded to those with means, and these toppers would often be indicative of an estate’s socioeconomic status. The more intricately designed pots were more expensive and therefore prized by those that wished to project their wealth by ornamenting their homes with beautiful embellishments to their fireplace smokestacks. The worn black and white paint adds so much character to the design. Most were not painted, making this one particularly stylish. One of the crown’s tines have been lost, adding to its antique charm. Today, they can still function as intended, however their excellent patination and form make for exceptional garden ornaments and/or decorative objects.

An enormous copper cauldron from England, mid to late 19th century, the metal plates riveted together and now oxidized to beautiful turquoise verdigris patina splashing the dark metal with painterly color. Likely used as a drum for washing clothing and bed linens, the industrial period is evident in the construction methods such as the folded edge at the top and studded joinery where the sheets overlap. An exceptional cast-stone planter dating to Victorian England, based on the “Medici Vase” from ancient Greece, once in the collection of the prestigious family now at the Uffizi in Florence. The iconic style has been reproduced as garden urns for hundreds of years to signify an educated taste for Classical art. This example features a flared rim over a magnificently sculpted bas-relief wrapping the exterior with figural narrative, what appears to be a bacchanalia under grape vines. Pairs of satyr faces (or Bacchus himself) mark opposing sides of the vessel where it widens again into a pronounced gadroon motif before narrowing into the fluted base. The urn rests on a square plinth to give it a stronger sense of balance and permanence in any indoor or outdoor setting. The circumference of the wide, shallow urns is defined by an egg & dart motif at the lip and beaded rows where they narrow and taper to the foot. Drainage holes pierce the sides of the bowls to use for planting (or drip irrigation) with an interior depth of 5”. The monumental bases feature a square block widening to a stacked foot on the ground, which differ slightly between them from where they were extracted from the original architecture.
