Dimensions: 107 ¼” H x 73 ¼” W x 18 ½” D
This magnificent vintage bookcase is a demonstration of French craftsmanship intersecting with 20th century design tastes in the manner of Charles Dudouyt, bridging 19th century Arts & Crafts traditions with the graphic, modern styling popular since Art Deco. Made from solid oak, the wood has a warm color and patina that highlights the natural grain and depth of the wood. The upper section is a series of open shelves, allowing for the display of books, trophies, heirlooms and other collections. Three upper shelves (10 ¼” deep) are solid planks, adjustable on sawtooth brackets to reconfigure as needed while the lowest shelf is fixed. Pilasters framing the openings of the shelves have fluted carvings terminating in a geometric motif like a colon. The lower body projects slightly beyond the upper section, and is organized into two shallow drawers nearly hidden above two pairs of paneled doors enclosing the undivided cabinet. Interior shelf measures 13 ⅝” deep. Look closely to appreciate the unique shape of the paneling on the six doors. All these features result in a bookcase that is distinguished but not imposing, characterized by thoughtful lines, a creative spirit, and substantial scale. Ideal for a library, office, or living room, this bookcase combines functionality with the sophistication of French antique furniture, making it a versatile and beautiful addition to any space. $8,995.00102"H x 71"W x 27.50"D
Dimensions: 102” H x 71” W x 27 ½” D
Louis XV period (18th century) French solid walnut armoire with stylized carvings that trace the dramatic paneled doors and serpentine apron, giving this large storage piece its historic character. Below the straight cornice is a thin frieze over a pair of arched doors that mirror each other’s Arabesque outline around the paneling. A wide pilaster in between (an extension of the left door) is punctuated at the center by a quatrefoil design. The doors open by working lock and key to reveal three shelves ranging from approximately 20 ½” to 22 ¾” deep with the middle shelf latching to the left door for safety. Note that the dowel rod appears to be a more recent addition, giving one the flexibility of either hanging or folded storage. A shallow, wide drawer at the base uses handforged iron ring pulls to slide open and a very unusual escutcheon at the center shaped like a star. The sinuous lines of the swelled apron transition into short cabriole legs, another signature of the Louis XV taste for refined, yet playful touches. From its graceful curves to robust proportions and charming patina, this Louis XV armoire will bring a comforting presence to any home. It has been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax to be ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition.

The doors open by working lock and key to reveal an interior fitted with two shelves, 13 ¾” deep. In the base section–behind the locking doors–there is one shelf over two small drawers (like a linen press) measuring 17” deep. French 18th Century Louis XVI Style Inlay Mahogany Commode
$9,800.0032.50"H x 51.38"W x 24.25"D
Dimensions: 32 ½” H x 51 ⅜” W x 24 ¼” D
An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this commode is ready to be enjoyed in your interior. Be sure to view the detailed images to see the current condition as the right side panel appears to have been repaired.

Under the linear crown is a stylized garland carved into the frieze over a pair of doors that mirror each other’s calligraphic outline around the paneling. Each door hangs on steel barrel hinges to support the weight, and use scrolling hardware that coordinates beautifully with the vine and foliate motifs elsewhere. The doors open by working lock and (massive) key to reveal an interior that has been crudely tacked with the most charming floral printed cotton in bold red & white. French 19th Century Empire Painted Commode
$5,200.0033.88"H x 42.25"W x 20.75"D
Dimensions: 33 ⅞” H x 42 ¼” W x 20 ¾” D
A French Empire three-drawer commode from the 19th century with its original marble top. A more recent artistic update by a Caribbean-blue painted finish complements the gilt bronze accents, for exciting contrasts in textures and tones. The top surface of dark, nearly black stone is dotted with the fossilized remains of ancient marine animals, among the curious patterns of marbleization. Note that the stone displays the expected patina of scratches and other signs of the commode’s historic age so please view the image gallery for more details. A pair of gilt bronze caryatid busts top the inverted pilasters which flank the stack of three, wide drawers that open by brass lion ring pulls. Escutcheons on each drawer front are purely decorative, no key is present, but their ornate wing motifs underscore the mythical and fantastic inspiration the Empire taste is known for. Contrasting slate blue paint has been applied as a decorative border around the drawer hardware and defines the pilasters further, which draws the eye downward to the wonderful paw feet at the floor. The matte paint remains mostly smooth with some areas of mottled craquelure. Cleaned and tightened, this antique is ready for your interior. French 19th Century Painted Empire Commode
$5,200.0034.13"H x 51.25"W x 23.50"D
Dimensions: 34 ⅛” H x 51 ¼” W x 23 ½” D
A French Empire commode from the 19th century, updated more recently with paint in layered & scraped faux finish that wouldn’t look out of place with Gustavian style furnishings. The top is a slab of Saint Anne marble flecked with smoky wisps of gray. Note that there are the expected chips to the edges of the stone, see the image gallery for more details. In the case below is an overhanging frieze drawer, without hardware, using a pair of grooves carved into the bottom edge to slide open. Making up the body of the piece are three large drawers with textured brass knobs and keyholes, however no key is present. The exterior surfaces have artistic layers of light “French gray” over blush-pink that give the piece a sense of movement and dynamic color blending with the patina from daily use. Columnar pilasters on each side are emphasized with ebonized finish (coordinating with the stone top) accented with brass capitals and bases in Neoclassical motifs rising from thick cylindrical feet. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve the finish, ready for your interior. Make sure to view the detailed images for a closer look.
