Italian 18th Century Painted Console Table
$7,800.0035.50"H x 41.75"W x 20.50"D
Dimensions: 35 ½” H x 41 ¾” W x 20 ½” D
An extraordinary parcel gilt and polychrome console table from Italy, circa 1780, which has miraculously retained its handpainted, stylized Neoclassical illustrations in green, yellow, and red. As if an artifact from Pompeii, whose rediscovery and excavations along with the town of Herculanaeum where shaping 18th century fashion, the table top features an illustration of a Greek-style vessel (krater) depicting a reclining male youth joined by a harpist to the left and a character with an offering of fruit to the right. Spanning the apron of the table is a repetitive line of palmette design in black over a pistachio-green background, which may be “lacca povera” – a type of decoupage that made works such as this more cost-effective. The tops of the square legs feature a geometric design in gold gilt–reminiscent of a Greek Key–before tapering to the floor. This antique console manages to span two millennia of decorative arts traditions (from the ancient world to the 18th century revival of them) and yet still feels original for the modern interior by its own artistic merits. Gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve the delicate patina. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition as there are multiple areas of loss and craquelure.
French Art Nouveau Gilt & Marble Console Table
$4,500.0029.50"H x 39.50"W x 17.50"D
Dimensions: 29 ½” H x 39 ½” W x 17 ½” D
French Art Nouveau giltwood console table circa 1900, a sculptural piece of furniture that expresses the artistry of the period when interior design took every opportunity to minimize the rigidity of the built environment, softening it with biomorphic references. This example has a shaped, white marble top that is slightly lobed at the front corners in line with the gently arching splay of the two legs. There are only two legs so the piece does need to be secured to a wall for safety. An entanglement of floral and ribbon carvings decorate the swelled apron, which meet in the center as a pendant with a single flower. Note how the smooth luster of the gilded finish is truly dazzling to behold, like a piece of fine jewelry for the home. A stretcher joining the legs seems to make a connection to the poetry of Japanese floral arrangements, using the slight asymmetry for visual tension. There appear to be some previous repairs to the legs and the marble shows the expected patina of dark spots and fine scratches. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition and message us with any questions.

A unique 19th century French workbench–formerly a prep table for the kitchen or other household work, easily adapted to a kitchen island for the modern interior as it contains one large drawer for convenient storage and retrieval. The beech wood planks of the top surface are arranged like a breadboard with smooth, lightly patinated texture and golden-brown color. Note the series of “honest” repairs as geometric patches adding another layer of visual interest. To the left side one finds a deep drawer to organize kitchen gadgets and utensils or whatever one might need around the home or creative studio. Square, muscular legs support the scale of the table joined by stretchers across the short sides all painted a vibrant and energizing shade of green. A narrow (unpainted) stretcher-shelf in between adds a small amount of surface area that could also be a footrest if paired with a couple of counter stools. The proportions, quality craftsmanship of the table would support a chef, an artist, or gardener and made even more practical by the addition of casters. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax–ready to join your interior. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
