The solid, reconstituted stone–a concrete material–is pigmented with dark gray streaks that gives definition to the thick hair framing the likeness of this ancient Macedonian hero. Patina from exposure to the elements has eroded some of his nose, neck, and cheek with other spotted coloration on top as if truly an artifact from the Acropolis. A massive French wine/beer bottle drying tree from circa 1920 in zinc plated metal. The spiky, conical form (also called a hedgehog) is made of fourteen graduated rings with hooks to hold the mouths of the bottles while they air dry, widening from approximately 14” diameter at the top ring to 25” at the bottom. Outside of the intended culinary use in a kitchen or pantry the rack might also be an unexpected coat tree, clothing rack for small accessories like scarves, bags, and hats, or sculptural statement in a garden. Portuguese 19th Century Carved Stone Pedestal Sink

A Classical pedestal sink from Portugal, 19th century, carved from stone in the form of a scallop shell as if designed by the artist Botticelli himself to draw Venus from the sea. Portuguese 18th Century Carved Stone Column

A fabulous 18th century carved stone column from Portugal, best described as Gothic or Romanesque in style, using the familiar acanthus motif around the capital. By the artist’s hands and tools the stone has been shaped to incredible depth within the folds of the leaves as they spread across the circumference. The abacus (the flat top surface) is rather irregular in shape either by time or being extracted from the original architecture. The square plinth base is similarly affected as the top in areas of loss and discoloration, which has been gently cleaned to appreciate the natural color and textures of the stone. Today it would make an extraordinary pedestal to uplift a garden urn or vase whether used inside or on the patio. French Vintage Reproduction Parthenon Frieze Panel

The Parthenon, that postcard image from the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, was once a great temple of white marble and a staggering program of sculptures from floor to ceiling to enhance the architecture. Built in the 5th century BCE for the goddess Athena, the structure is mostly in ruins now with its treasures lost, looted, or held in the collections of major museums. This relief is a 20th century French reproduction by the Atelier de Moulage du Louvre, the plaster casting workshop at the Louvre in Paris, of one section of the pictorial frieze that wrapped around the interior structure. Originally this frieze measured over 500 linear feet, telling a narrative about a procession toward the Acropolis involving many distinct characters, these two horsemen included. In this particular frame two men on horseback make their way to the temple, note the animal hide draped on the rider to the right side with two clawed feet waving as they gallop along.
