A fabulous French oval giltwood barometer from the 19th century, aligning with the style of Louis XVI. French 19th century Louis XVI style painted and parcel gold-gilt barometer and thermometer. It is a recognizable ‘banjo’ shaped scientific instrument with all the carved details in gold gilt mounted to a case of painted, sage green. The circular dial of the barometer has painted (faded) lettering behind protective glass for reading the current conditions, while the thermometer above is scaled. It may no longer work for taking accurate measurements, this relic of meteorology history is an intriguing decorative piece to add French flourish to any wall. A captivating three-piece mantel clock, from 19th century France, crafted in Siena marble and gilt bronze, with multiple stylistic reference points from the Grand Tour of Europe. The architectural clock tower at center features a cast bronze lion sitting proudly upon the lintel from which the case hangs, supported by marble columns with Empire-style brass mounts. Protective glass encloses the clock dial, using a concealed hinge to open for winding and setting the time original key included. The clock will chime when provoked but does not keep time–please contact your local horologist for an estimate. The pierced brass door on the back opens to access the mechanism for service, with the name “L. Latour” etched into the metal case. A representation of the French Imperial Eagle forms the pendulum. Flanking the clock are two accessory pedestals in the same ochre-toned Siena marble, mounted with exquisite bronze urns of elaborate Neoclassical motifs in the style of bronziers Choiselat & Gallien. A carved crest of a basket with flowers crowns this heavily carved oak case clock, c. mid 1800’s. A glazed-panel door just below the crest is flanked by sides with pierced half-moon carvings and houses the painted enamel clock face with Roman numerals and pierced brass hands. The pressed brass fronton surrounding the clock’s face is quite stunning and has a horn of plenty, rising sun, basket of flowers, floral and foliate motifs. The clock has a weight driven escapement and strikes on the hour, two minutes past the hour and half hour. Just below is the rectilinear raised and recessed panel columnar door with extensive carvings and a glazed cabochon revealing the brass bob. The cabinet has basket, floral, ribbon, guilloche, pearl, urn and lea & berry motif carvings. The whole sits on a plinth base. This clock has been cleaned and is in working condition.
