This exceptional demilune walnut enfilade was made during the Directoire Period, in that style, in France circa 1790. The rounded ends create a crescent shape, hence the name “demi-lune”: French for “half-moon”. A wide central drawer accounts for the majority of the case antique’s apron, with smaller, curved drawers flanking it. The central drawer contains a working lock, while the outer drawers do not. The outer drawers on this particular enfilade pull straight out. Typically, demilune-shaped pieces have shaped outer drawers that pull out to the sides. All the drawers are opened using their wonderful styled brass ring pulls. The body is made up of three interior cavities, each separate, with the largest in the middle. All three interiors have a single fixed shelf and can be secured using their working locks. The compartments are spaced by fluted pilasters that flank the door and terminate with the iconic tapered Directoire leg. Six of these legs exist and are all capped with brass sabots.
