French 18th Century Louis XV Style Commode

An extraordinary 18th century oak chest of drawers, it is of striking color and form to display in any room of the home not limited to clothing storage. The five drawers are finely carved with low-relief acanthus designs that scroll across the fronts, animating the panels with near perfect symmetry. Drawers glide easily using the slender brass drop handles; note the keyhole escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Bulbous bun feet elevate the dark case from the floor. Here is an outstanding example of English craft blending with the flourish one might expect of Italian or French furniture of similar age. A gorgeous 19th century French mahogany chest of drawers–seven drawers to be exact, one for each day of the week-a classic Louis Philippe semainier with spellbinding patterns in the matched wood grain. The top surface is chamfered at the corners and the crown is wrapped with narrow pieces of the expressive veneer to begin the “waterfall” effect that leads the eye from one drawer to the next. The seven drawers feature stunning bookmatched fronts of radiating grain patterns that feel cohesive and expansive; they also share a key between the lower six drawers to secure the functioning locks. The top drawer is unique for using one key exclusively. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the historic character of this antique storage piece. An extraordinary Italian walnut commode from the 19th century, Neoclassical in style, decorated with a graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that creates movement and definition over the exterior. The surface uses two, beautiful planks shaped to chamfered corners and outlined around the edges with a sawtooth pattern of inlay in contrasting light/dark tones. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Each drawer opens by ring pull hardware; note the escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. The side panels have inlaid designs complementary to those on the drawer fronts so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. A gorgeous 19th century French walnut chest of drawers–eight drawers to be exact-designed as a classic Louis Philippe commode with spellbinding patterns in the matched wood grain. The top surface is rounded at the corners and wrapped with narrow pieces of the burled walnut to begin the “waterfall” effect that leads the eye from one drawer to the next. A frieze drawer on the very top of the stack no longer has a functioning lock, but is easily opened by gently grabbing the corners. The six drawers in the middle of the case feature stunning bookmatched fronts of radiating grain patterns that feel cohesive and expansive; they also share a key between them to secure the functioning locks. One additional drawer in the base is nearly hidden except for the keyhole that does not lock. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax. An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. This marble-topped fruitwood commode from France is a more recent (1900s) interpretation of a Louis XVI original, such a distinct style that brings regal refinement to any interior for clothing or other linens. Saint Anne marble on the top surface exhibits wispy patches of gray-scale in the stone, finished in turreted front corners and flat at the back. Each of the three drawers are embellished with (patinated) brass trim around the paneling and easily glide using bail pull handles to operate. One key is shared between the three working locks. French 19th century Directoire style fruitwood chest of drawers, appearing to be a semainier except with six drawers instead of the requisite seven. Below the modest wood top and rounded corners is a stack of six drawers inlaid with ebonized diamond shapes for graphic contrast to the glowing fruitwood. Note the bottom drawer is actually double-height with two diamonds to blend quietly in with the upper five. Sometimes referred to as a lingerie chest, the height and narrow proportions would elegantly host the clothing or personal effects of nearly anyone–suiting a range of transitional decorating tastes. All drawers glide with ease using simple brass ring pulls to open, no key is present to operate the locks. Short, cabriole legs lift the case from the floor.
