French 19th Century Barbotine Ceramic Asparagus Dish

French two-handled ceramic barbotine asparagus dish of vibrant colors, c. 1870’s. A favorite delicacy of Madame de Pompadour, asparagus or “points d’amour” became de rigéur at the dinner table during the 18th century and continuing into the English Victorian era. The word “barbotine” refers to the thin clay paste used for making ceramic decorations in low relief.
