A magnificent pair of 18th century Portuguese carved pine wall consoles, also called brackets, originally part of the architectural program of a cathedral altar. They have been updated more recently with travertine stone tops for a durable surface that complements the timeless quality of the baroque profile. Deep cornices project with chamfered corners (of which the stone tops are shaped to fit) with a beautiful slope that contours then retreats toward the wall. A finely carved finial inverted from the base reveals foliate carvings to echo the acanthus at the top corners, unifying the look and enhancing its architectural function. Truly these are a remarkable feat of vision and craft. At just over 20” in depth, these floating brackets are a practical solution in lieu of console tables with legs, satisfying both a decorative statement and shelf to display upon. French 19th century Louis XVI style painted and parcel gold-gilt barometer and thermometer. It is a recognizable ‘banjo’ shaped scientific instrument with all the carved details in gold gilt mounted to a case of painted, sage green. The circular dial of the barometer has painted (faded) lettering behind protective glass for reading the current conditions, while the thermometer above is scaled. It may no longer work for taking accurate measurements, this relic of meteorology history is an intriguing decorative piece to add French flourish to any wall. This special collaboration combined the research and translation from École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem (an academic institution founded in the late 19th century) with the bold, modern style of Balint to produce a work that was engaging and approachable to read for a wide audience. The colorful supporting images bring the text to life through thought-provoking scenes which are a complete departure from any previous styles or schools of religious art but still very attuned to the emotional and spiritual weight of the verses. Condition is very good with some wear to the red leather-bound cover; the gilded edges of the pages have dulled; some foxing of the paper, otherwise the plates are still vibrant to enjoy. A fantastic oratory or tabletop altar from 18th century Portugal, made of carved, painted, and gilded wood taking the form of a small cabinet (where religious statuary would be displayed). The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons

A towering pair of 18th century French forged, wrought iron andiron-chenets to watch over the hearth. They include a small basket at the top for warming, the rim impressed with a geometric pattern that is repeated on the column and contrasted by the twisted detail of the rods. Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. Portuguese 19th Century Glazed Terracotta Bowl

An inspiring example of 19th century Portuguese folk art pottery, this handmade terracotta bowl expresses the unique history of decorative arts traditions found across the Iberian peninsula which borrowed imagery from cultures far and wide. Crafted in terracotta and finished with a buttery gold slip glaze, the bowl features whimsical (if not symbolic) crosshatched pyramids in burnt orange, and parallel lines dividing the interior into four quadrants occupied by dark green wave motifs. The ruffled “pie crust” rim is gently pinched to round out the decorative effects, but like similar fajalauza bowls from Spain this piece would have been used regularly in the kitchen and not just to display.
