French 19th Century “Oyster Shell” Barbotine Ceramic Planter
Dimensions: 7-1/2″H x 17-3/8″W x 9-3/4″D
A delightful glazed barbotine ceramic planter, late 19th century, France. This piece has an aquatic/marine theme, with the bowl being formed from stacked oyster shells that are cradled by precious coral. Each side featuring a haut-relief green-glazed iguana. The interior has been finished in an exceptional robin’s-egg blue providing a lovely contrast to the exterior. Scrolled escargot feet lift the planter and playfully continue the coastal theme! The word “barbotine” refers to the thin clay paste used for making ceramic decorations in low relief.
