This French dark pine bookcase from the late 19th century makes a dramatic statement by its scale alone, and the crackled texture of the painted interior gives it visual intrigue to anchor any kitchen, dining room, library, or office. An endearing 18th century Italian hand-painted buffet that departs from the strong visual codes of the Baroque period adopting the relaxed manner of Louis XV and Gustavian polychrome furniture. The tone-on-tone blue cabinet is fitted with two doors on the front side, in between nicely canted corners interrupted by narrow, paneled sections filled with abstract gradients of blue in reference to the sky. The upper surface is a dark slate whereas the majority of the exterior is cerulean. Central panels on the doors have been treated as a cartouche for artistic expression to illustrate what appears to be the casting out of Adam & Eve from the garden of Eden and their circumstances following. A statement piece for a dining room or foyer, this 19th century Louis XVI style enfilade speaks of refined taste and luxury. The thick slab of dark, brecciated marble conforms to the gentle arc of the demilune shape, protruding in a slight breakfront over the middle cabinet doors and given definition by gilt bronze “rosary” trim. Two rectangular drawers in the center are separated by square, gilt bronze rosettes between the curved drawers on the ends–all using laurel wreath ring pulls to open. Note that the outer drawers have only one ring pull each and have been patched to fill in the missing hardware. In the main body, four paneled doors with stunning bird-eye maple veneer stained to a deep mahogany tone enclose the storage compartments: quarter-round cabinets to the sides, and a wide cabinet behind the middle doors each with their own key to operate working locks. Pilasters descend to fluted, tapered feet capped in brass elevating the piece from the floor giving it a sense of lightness in spite of the grand scale.
