A French Empire style, 19th century oval bouillotte table lamp with its original painted tole shade surrounding a line of four candles. Bouillotte is a card game popular in France during the 18th & 19th centuries. For light, they would use a lamp with specially adapted features: as the candles would burn down one would use a key to lower the shade on the central column, allowing the players to be free of glare. The oval tole shade is dark green on the exterior with gilt illustrations of alternating palmette and foliate motifs and off-white inside to maximize the light from the four chandelier-base bulbs. A classic artichoke finial is mounted to the column, with a beautifully detailed key for adjusting the height.
