A stunning antique French earthenware tureen made by Gien in the late 19th century and decorated in beautiful transferware motifs.  The design is called ‘Rouen’ like the city in North West France.  Delicate, hand painted bands of scrolling acanthus leaf motifs border the lid, bowl and base.  The stylish lid features a double filet border and shell finial knob.  The finish is clean and remarkable for its age, perfect for serving soups, stews or gumbo.  Two scroll-form handles are fashioned onto the sides with shell embellishments.  This vessel rests on a pedestal base.
