A heavy ironstone oval platter from early 20th century France (circa 1900) originally designed for serving cuts of meat, hence the grooves arranged in a fan shape on the base. Such an elegant form makes for a beautiful presentation on any buffet or dining table. There is one curious inclusion on the rim, a short dark line that is vitrified into the clay/glaze. French 19th Century Massive Ceramic Olive Oil Jars
$2,450.0025.75"H x 18"W x 18"D
Dimensions: 25 ¾” H x 18” W x 18” D
A pair of enormous 19th century French stoneware cruches traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine–now artifacts of culinary history to add to one’s studio pottery collection or décor. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salty glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surfaces of the bottles in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessels use integrated handles at the top to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth that would have been corked. One cork is present. We believe this item to be in good antique condition considering its age. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition and message us with any questions. Sold as a pair.

Spanish 19th Century Sgraffito Terracotta Olive Jar
$1,400.0020.50"H x 16.75"W x 16.75"D
Dimensions: 20 ½” H x 16 ¾” W x 16 ¾” D
Decorated in artistic sgraffito lines and applied, twisting ribbon this large Spanish olive jar was hand-crafted in the 19th century and now, covered in a wonderful patina that sparks the imagination, it can be enjoyed in the home or garden. The rather bulbous form is ringed with flat bands in between ropes shaped to look like they are twisting around the circumference–a sign of the artisan’s vison to elevate the culinary intention of this humble olive jar to a higher status of studio pottery. Random spots of white and green lichen or moss add to its unique charm. The robust thickness of the fired terracotta makes this antique still inclined to be used indoors and out; there is not a drainage hole in the base which may limit the decorative functions. Please view the detailed images for the current condition as they are an essential part of the description.
