A beautiful lithograph telling such a wonderful story, all in black and white with gold gilt frame ‘In Camargue , between the Rhone River and Mediterranean Sea is a village legend and religious tradition transformed into a place of worship and pilgrimage unusual.
” Among the primitive saints from Palestine, Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome, close relatives Christ according to the Gospel, and their servant Sara, arrived in a boat without sails or oars, reached the Mediterranean shores The Camargue village where they settle takes their name. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. buried in the land they have chosen, these women are very popular in Provence and Languedoc, are subject to a pilgrimage which takes place on 24 and 25 May, and at the end of October. a crowd of pilgrims come to worship relics preserved in the upper chapel of the eponymous church, which descends at a ceremony sung and is carried in procession to the sea where they are bathed in memory the arrival of the holy women. Since the beginning of XX th century, gypsies around the world also come in pilgrimage to venerate Sara, became their patron. A crypt in the church dedicated to him.
Frédéric Mistral tells in his book Memoirs Stories and his own pilgrimage to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a highlight of collective devotion and jubilation of the whole Provence.’

French Midcentury Black & Bronze Floor Candlestand

French circa 1950 “pique cierge” that is, a large and freestanding candlestick to place at the church altar or anywhere around the room. The black metal structure is mounted with a pricket (the spike within from the brass bobeche) to hold a pillar candle which rises on a simple rod interrupted by a brass ring stationed in the middle. Below, an angular tripod branches into three feet blanched on brass spheres for a Modern touch that would harmonize with a range of interior styles dating from French Empire to more Contemporary. Portuguese Pair of 18th Century Pine Altar Consoles

A magnificent pair of 18th century Portuguese carved pine wall consoles, also called brackets, originally part of the architectural program of a cathedral altar. They have been updated more recently with travertine stone tops for a durable surface that complements the timeless quality of the baroque profile. Deep cornices project with chamfered corners (of which the stone tops are shaped to fit) with a beautiful slope that contours then retreats toward the wall. A finely carved finial inverted from the base reveals foliate carvings to echo the acanthus at the top corners, unifying the look and enhancing its architectural function. Truly these are a remarkable feat of vision and craft. At just over 20” in depth, these floating brackets are a practical solution in lieu of console tables with legs, satisfying both a decorative statement and shelf to display upon. Three centuries of patina enriches the natural wood grain and character of these intriguing antique fixtures to become a focal point of any room. 18th Century Portuguese Altar

A fantastic oratory or tabletop altar from 18th century Portugal, made of carved, painted, and gilded wood taking the form of a small cabinet (where religious statuary would be displayed). The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. A stunning pair of Italian 19th century giltwood wall appliqués–decorative elements to enhance the architectural program–likely obtained from a church or cathedral as they are flat and unfinished on the backs, intended to be viewed from front. The Eternal Flame urn forms are handcarved with stunning Neoclassical motifs and textures that not only conveys the power of the church but also the lasting influence of the Empire shaped by Napoleon’s vision. At the top of each urn is a textured, waving flame that would have been illuminated by candlelight to magnify its aura. Pairs of eagle heads–iconic symbols of the period–are mounted on each side of the urn’s shoulder with an amber glass rosette embedded in between them. Festooned swags emphasize the curvature and fullness of the urn which is revisited again where the form tapers toward the base as fluted carvings mixed with additional floral-foliate references unifying the exuberance of the design. Block feet painted the color of red bole elevate the urns to stabilize them on a table or mantel. Note that evidence of wax is still visible on the backsides, confirming their historic age. Portuguese 18th century assemblage painting of the Resurrection of Christ, likely an architectural fragment or retablo that would have hung in a church. Constructed of thick wood panels the central vignette features the risen Jesus with right arm outstretched to gesture with three-fingers (for the Holy Trinity) while his left hand holds a red banner against a pastel corona in the background. Four soldiers in the foreground regard him expressing a range of emotions from grief to shock. Flanking the middle scene are two narrow panels entirely hand-painted with exquisite geometric designs in more bold saturations of color, resembling Moorish tiles, all outlined in gold gilt. A stunning pair of French, 18th century giltwood candlesticks from a church or cathedral. These substantial “pricket” candlesticks will make a statement on any mantel or table: tall, slender forms on tripod bases are mounted with their original wrought iron spikes and their baluster silhouettes are decorated with Classical (and subtle Louis XVI) patterns. Stylized leaves, fluting, and festooned motifs are highlighted by the rich gold leaf finish now aged to a soft patina. Note that as the pair would have been against the altar and not seen in the round, they are not entirely gilded to save resources so one vertical strip on the backside appears more of a burnt sienna than gold. French 19th Century Raised Embroidery of Madonna & Child

An impressive work of textile art, this French 19th century raised gold embroidery of the Madonna & Child resembles liturgical vestments such as a cope or chasuble that a member of the clergy would wear to mass, applying the same techniques and quality to a more static image set within a wood frame. The appliqués are mounted on ivory silk with a moiré pattern that gives the illusion of faux bois, shifting and rippling in the light along with the metallic threads. Mary and the Christ child are rendered with handpainted faces and hands that achieve the kind of tenderness observed in Italian Renaissance art; they are wrapped in robes with a variety of textures & stiches to indicate the depth of gathered folds of fabric, including gold sequins, as she holds the child safely over the embroidered red serpent around her feet. The figural vignette is contained within orphrey or orfoi embroidered border of foliate and floral theme in gold, green, pale blue and red. Delicate, scrolling vines grow outward from the textile border across the negative space of ivory silk toward the ebonized, carved wood frame protecting the delicate work. French 18th Century Pewter Plate of Saints Peter and Paul

An exceptional example of the European pewter tradition, this ceremonial charger plate from France dates to the year 1735 and depicts an exchange between the Saints Peter and Paul that has been meticulously etched into the metal for a commemorative purpose (like the feast of June 29 honoring both saints) or perhaps for some other teaching purpose. The plate rim is engraved with scrolling acanthus, inscribed with “NF” at the top separated by a tiny fleur-de-lis, with “Anno 1735” at the bottom. In the central frame, Saint Peter (spelled “Petri”) is holding a book in his left hand and is extending a key to Paul (Pavli), who holds a book in his left hand and right hand on a sword pointed down. Their names are separated by a fleur-de-lis, and in the background around the figures one may notice stylized floral depictions growing from the ground. Faint scratches over the original image would suggest this plate was used regularly–perhaps in a convent, abbey, or house of worship. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Italian 17th Century Walnut and Leather Armchair

This Italian armchair from 1680 may look like a throne, in fact it is a wonderfully patinated example of a friar’s chair–historically referred to as a “ sillon de frailero” type of chair found in abbeys. The friar’s armchair was initially an Italian design and quickly became associated with Spain and the colonies after its introduction in the 16th century. This wonderful armchair from the 17th century has a tall and sturdy frame carved from walnut, stretching a thick leather backrest and seat which are secured by two rows of nailheads. As this was not necessarily a chair for comfort, the lines of the arms and legs are mostly flat and straight to encourage good posture. Wonderful craquelure patina covers the dark leather, while the wood grain is marked with dense patina from nearly four centuries of use.
