French 19th Century Louis Philippe Gilt Mirror

A French, 19th century Louis Philippe mirror in a thick, antiqued silver frame texturized by dark burnishing and craquelure. Etched into the molding is a rather naïve fluted pattern interrupted by areas of wear that gives depth and authentic patina to the design. Look closely to see the creative efforts made over time to experiment with the metallic luster: painted edges along the outside in a golden yellow, faux burnished wisps of black on the rope twist carvings, and what appears to be flickers of gold underneath. The original mirror plate sparkles with a fine layer of crystals and foxing. This gorgeous mirror will be right at home in many decorating tastes and rooms, over a mantel, commode, or on the wall. A petite, music-themed giltwood mirror from France, 18th century. Topping the slender piece is carved ornamentation of a dainty satin ribbon draped over a violin, flanked by delightful scrolled rosettes. Patinated gilt has left a soft glow over the dark wood underneath. Multiple rows of various carving techniques draw the eye into the original plate which exhibits the foxing so desirable of antique mercury glass. At the base, two small feet elevate and protect the elegantly styled molding, mounted on a gray painted wood back panel. The mirror is strung with wire, ready to hang in your interior. An exciting pair of French mirrors framed in classic reeded molding of the Louis XVI taste that reflects the luster of gold gilt now patinated to a fine craquelure texture. Note these mirrors are a seamless marriage of 20th century frames enclosing 19th century mercury glass plates which exhibit hazy foxing so desirable of antique glass. The rectangular frames are symmetrical, however the mirror glass is stacked vertically as they were made at a time or place where the technology was not available to make a single, large plate. Look closely to observe the crystals that add sparkle to the reflection. The ribbed lines of the molding are warmed by red bole peeking through that give dimension to the otherwise restrained design. A dazzling French mirror from circa 1840 with the potential to brighten up any room and across many decorating tastes owing to its subtle patterning. Within the slightly beveled molding the understated design of scrolled foliate and heart motif reveals textural differences for definition, depending on the ambient lighting conditions. Red bole peeking through adds further warmth to the luster of gilt. Shown in vertical orientation, the rectangular frame is symmetrical to hang in either direction. Curious lines of intermittent foxing across the original mirror glass plate confirm the age, drawing the viewer into the reflection. Etched into the frame is a fluted pattern interrupted by a few cracks and areas of wear which give authentic patina to the design. This gorgeous mirror will be right at home in many decorating tastes and rooms. The mirror plate appears to be original and is lightly foxed producing a thin veil of fog across the glass.
