This French Louis Philippe period armoire, circa 1840, is modest in scale and long on style, made of carved and veneered mahogany with expressive grain patterns and rich coloration. It takes the familiar silhouette of Louis Philippe case pieces and scales them down to proportions that can fit any room or function, beyond clothing or linens storage. The door retains its original mirror plate–which appears frosted with an even layer of crystals that glitter in sunlight–opening by working lock and key to access the spacious interior of three shelves, 10 ½” deep, adjustable on sawtooth brackets. In the base of the piece is a drawer (using the key like a pull as the lock no longer functions) with a protective lid that slides back and forth. An additional, secret drawer is hiding just above the feet. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax, this dazzling antique armoire is ready for your interior. A massive late 19th century French oak trifold mirror originally a fixture in a dressmaker or tailor shop, soon to be an indispensable part of a well-appointed dressing room or closet for the modern interior. When closed, the heavy oak doors appear to be an architectural feature as if concealing another room or cabinet on the other side. Unfolding the overlying doors reveals the mirrored interior allowing the viewer to observe their outfit from nearly every perspective. Designed to hang from a French cleat on the back for safety. By some good fortune this piece has retained its original mirror plate which exhibits a haze of foxing and spots to confirm the historic age. Across the top of the frame is a Neoclassical, foliate motif with scrolled design on the corners. Surrounding the glass is a gadroon pattern of curved ridges like one might find on silver or brass tableware, carved to high-relief.
