A gorgeous mahogany roll top desk, done in the Louis XVI style, from 19th century, France. The desk has a rectangular galleried marble top, under which are three short drawers that all have working locks. This roll top opens to reveal an interior work space complete with six more drawers, one large pigeon hole, and a sliding writing surface that is covered in black leather. Four lockable drawers are positioned around the kneehole, with the rightmost drawer containing a hidden compartment. Slides extend from the desk’s sides, also topped in black leather, and provide even more workspace. There is abundant brass ornamentation found on this handsome antique desk. All fluted carvings are filled with brass ormolu, and the drawer fronts are trimmed in brass. Brass is also found in the desk’s drawer pulls, escutcheons and sabots, circa 1840.
