French Pair of 19th Century Cast Iron Urn Planters

An elegant pair of late 19th century French cast iron planters in the silhouette of “Medici urns”, displaying a Neoclassical taste that has been given a unique identity by way of a painted green finish over the metal. A rim of gadrooned motif flares out over the vessel which is decorated in a tight bouquet of wheat and scrolling ivy, widening into a gadrooned midsection. The slender foot is mounted on a square plinth base for stability. Note that one of the urns has received a professional repair by a welder just at the neck. The surfaces retain much of the teal-green paint which, by age and exposure, has patinated to areas of rusty oxidation and scattered wear. An elegant storage piece for a dining room or foyer, this 20th century Louis XVI style enfilade captures the refinement of the period in timeless finishes like marble and mahogany. The white marble top follows the turreted profile of the case, where the stone does show evidence of prior repairs on each rounded corner. outlined by a pierced brass gallery cut away at the front. Three rectangular drawers in the frieze easily open by ring-pull hardware, flanked on the sides by reeded brass panels at the top of the legs. In the main body, three paneled doors in flamed mahogany veneer outlined in brass trim enclose the compartments. Each contains fixed shelves: two narrow cabinets on the left and right (15 ¼” deep), and a wide cabinet in the middle (16” deep). A little apron hangs below the center door, enhanced by a linear, floral appliqué of gilt bronze. Three keys included for the working locks. Made in the Art Nouveau taste, this pier-style mirror is composed of an original, elongated beveled mirror plate that displays an intriguing haze of dark foxing throughout, towering over the console/cabinet and shelves (secured by a series of dowels to disassemble as needed). All the wooden construction is painted in a thick creamy white with parcel gilt details to achieve a sense of lightness against the grand proportions. A stylized pediment above the glass features a gilded floral crown which sets the tone for the biophilic and gilt elements worked into every component of the frame, as botanical references, rosettes, or simply lines painted on the turned wood baluster columns. English Victorian book stand, circa 1900 invented by John Carter and patented as a “Literary Machine” that offers two adjustable components mounted on a brass rod: the small mahogany easel to prop up a book and the circular shelf below to place one’s drink, eyeglasses, candle, or other small items that would support the enjoyment of reading. The shelf is not only adjustable in height but also slides along a cantilevered rod and can be angled to a comfortable degree for viewing. Note the small lyre-shaped clip protruding from the top as another, thoughtful convenience. The tall brass rod is mounted on a cast iron base of four arched feet with ornate scrolled motifs. On the back of the book display is the original tag from the maker “Carters” with the address in London. English circa 1820 Wellington-style chest of drawers made of mahogany in dazzling flamed grain that stretches across the case. The tall and narrow chest is secured to the sides by corbel-topped carved pilasters which are actually flaps on hinges to secure the drawers and provide a vertical counterpoint to the movement in the grain. No key is present. What appears to be nine drawer fronts are actually seven, like a semainier, reserving the middle for a compact secretary drawer disguised as two drawers which slide out and unfold as the tooled, green leather writing surface. To the back of the case are open pigeon holes and five small drawers veneered in luminous maple. An original glass inkwell is hidden in the lower right drawer. Swedish Gustavian Period 18th Century Painted Commode

A spectacular three-drawer commode from Sweden, circa 1790, that alludes to a Louis XVI influence met with the pared-down Nordic sensibility of both culture and time period. On top are the remains of a gray paint washing the surface which is shaped to chamfered front corners that overhang the fluted pilasters. The case of three drawers features weathered layers of rust-red paint in that delightfully tactile, scraped finish so iconic of the Gustavian style. The ruddy complexion is interrupted by small brass ring-pull hardware displaying Neoclassical urns along with oval escutcheons (however no key is present). A gorgeous Louis XVI style marble-topped mahogany commode from France, circa 1870, with transitional details that could suit a wide range of decorating tastes today. The white marble features delicate gray veining carved with turreted front corners that conforms to the legs. Each of the three drawers are inset with polished brass trim around the paneling and understated escutcheons. No key is present. The top drawer is divided into three sections which makes it quite useful as a dresser for clothing as well as household items. Dutch 18th Century Oak Kussenkast Armoire

An extraordinary Dutch wardrobe made in the late Renaissance period, 18th century. This substantial antique work of storage furniture is all hand-crafted of solid oak, some panels with “tigering” that creates a rippled appearance in the wood to fascinate in any room for storage of linens, clothing, or household essentials. Two thick, paneled doors work in tandem by functioning lock and key to enclose the divided interior: the right door is fitted with the lock while the left door is secured by a forged iron slide bolt in the top. The doors open to reveal two fixed shelves per side, ranging from 13 ½” – 19 ¼” deep over a pair of shallow drawers in the base opening by turned wood knobs. It appears that a small hanging rod was once added to the right-side cabinet which has since been removed leaving the brackets in place to retrofit to one’s own unique needs and taste. One of the most distinguishing features of this piece are the ebonized, bun feet whose roundness and proportions are a delightful contrast to the geometry above. French 19th Century Mahogany Bibliotheque with Blue Velvet Interior

A capacious, 19th century French Louis Philippe style bibliothèque, handcrafted of mahogany with a row of four glass-front doors for displaying treasured books, heirlooms, and other collections in a living/dining room, office or library. The clean, linear order and warm color allows this timeless design to fit any number of historic and transitional decorating tastes. Behind the two pairs of locking doors are three interior shelves (10 ½” deep) that seem to float against a plush backing of dark blue velvet. Upon closer inspection there are worn areas in the fabricl, minor holes and tears particularly concentrated to where the bolts connect the upper body to the base cabinet–see the image gallery for examples. The lower buffet projects an additional 12 ¾” inches from the top cabinet (like a buffet à deux corps), creating a generous ledge for serving and display that stands 32 ¼” from the floor. This ledge exhibits a few scratches and nicks from use over the years, to be expected, see detailed images. Four locking doors enclose the divided interior which follow the proportions of the upper body. Each pair of doors work in tandem by a lock & key and both compartments have a stationary shelf, 23 ⅜” deep. This striking storage piece has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to bring out the rich grain pattern and historic patina, ready for your interior. English 19th Century Ebonized Inlay Credenza

A spectacular cabinet/credenza from England circa 1850, displaying many of the audacious characteristics as the Third Empire style of France within the same time period. Presented in an approachable, demilune form the curved case is emphasized by luxurious materials and techniques on every surface: opaque ebonized woods make a graphic contrast against the luminous, figured maple inlaid with geometric and foliate marquetry set off by gilt ormolu beading on the edges. Quarter-round cabinets on the left and right have full visibility through curved glass doors to view the contents arranged on velvet-lined shelves. Behind the locking door at center adorned with a marquetry cartouche, the interior is also lined in a worn velvet which wraps around a single shelf, 11 ¾” deep. The whole is raised on a plinth base. French 19th Century Oak and Marble Work Table

This oak work table is topped with a slab of white marble that has been chamfered at the front two corners for practicality and decorative detail.
