French 18th Century Pewter Plate of Saints Peter and Paul
$1,200.009.50"H x 9.50"W x 0.50"D
Dimensions: 9 ½” H x 9 ½” W x ½” D
An exceptional example of the European pewter tradition, this ceremonial charger plate from France dates to the year 1735 and depicts an exchange between the Saints Peter and Paul that has been meticulously etched into the metal for a commemorative purpose (like the feast of June 29 honoring both saints) or perhaps for some other teaching purpose. The plate rim is engraved with scrolling acanthus, inscribed with “NF” at the top separated by a tiny fleur-de-lis, with “Anno 1735” at the bottom. In the central frame, Saint Peter (spelled “Petri”) is holding a book in his left hand and is extending a key to Paul (Pavli), who holds a book in his left hand and right hand on a sword pointed down. Their names are separated by a fleur-de-lis, and in the background around the figures one may notice stylized floral depictions growing from the ground. Faint scratches over the original image would suggest this plate was used regularly–perhaps in a convent, abbey, or house of worship. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
