A French 19th century stoneware cruche traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using luminous salt glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surface of the bottle in nuanced shifts of color from earthy browns to mustard to the neutral greige of the clay. The bulbous vessel uses a small loop handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. Note the interesting medallion on the front of the neck, with fleur de lis icon to underscore the distinctly French origins. A sweet collection of eleven (11) antique dessert plates by Creil et Montereau, France, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. The style is known as “Linotte”, that is a small type of finch, and while the plates may not feature avian imagery within the blossoming vine pattern tracing the rim, their woodland realm can still be near. Condition as expected from time and use with darkened areas of chips on the rims, crazing and faded transfers. Stamped on the reverse with the marks of the foundry and the initials C & M. Portuguese Vintage Set of 46 Cabbage Plates in Three Sizes

A fantastic and extensive set of Portuguese-made green cabbageware plates in three sizes for casual meals or cultivated dinner parties. The smallest plate size is ideal for bread or dessert, they feature pronounced ribs like a realistic leaf of cabbage or lettuce, appearing more vintage in age without the signature of a foundry apart from the numbers “2621” stamped in the base. One of the small plates exhibits a repaired break across the middle, see the image gallery for more information. The remaining salad and dinner plates do bear the stamp of the iconic foundry Bordallo Pinheiro and are more recent in age, exhibiting the symmetrical vein design that radiates across the plate. The plates have a comfortable heft to them and pleasing, scalloped shape. Sold as a complete set of 46 pieces. Decorated in artistic sgraffito lines and applied, twisting ribbon this large Spanish olive jar was hand-crafted in the 19th century and now, covered in a wonderful patina that sparks the imagination, it can be enjoyed in the home or garden. The rather bulbous form is ringed with flat bands in between ropes shaped to look like they are twisting around the circumference–a sign of the artisan’s vison to elevate the culinary intention of this humble olive jar to a higher status of studio pottery. Random spots of white and green lichen or moss add to its unique charm. The robust thickness of the fired terracotta makes this antique still inclined to be used indoors and out; there is not a drainage hole in the base which may limit the decorative functions.
