French 19th Century Tall Chest of Drawers

Dimensions: 34 ½” H x 41 ½” W x 21 ⅜” D

A compact, yet substantial French commode from circa 1820 wrapped in expressive, bookmatched walnut mounted with lion face ring-pull hardware on the drawers. The dark marble on top features wild streaks of black veining throughout the gray stone, revealing small patches of blush and white. The stone is lightly patinated with fine scratches and edge chips nearly hidden by the movement in the veining. Two columnar pilasters flank the stack of three drawers whose veneered fronts are matched for expansive continuity between them, punctuated by the regal faces of lions clutching ring pulls and shield escutcheons over the keyholes. One key is shared between the working locks, and all drawers have been thoroughly cleaned inside & out to glide easily. Finished with a French paste wax to maintain the gorgeous color and patina, this handsome storage piece is ready for its next home. English 19th century towering chest-on-chest in the Georgian style, circa 1850, the case is built from mahogany with beautiful coloration in the grain. Dentil molding accentuates the crown over side-by-side top drawers mounted on a stack of six spacious drawers. Of the eight drawers, seven drawers retain functioning locks with two keys included (the upper left drawer does not lock). Heavy brass drop handles facilitate easy opening and closing of the drawers which have been thoroughly cleaned inside. The base unit projects slightly beyond the chest on top, underscoring the feeling of permanence and strength, rising on beautifully carved bracket feet. A striking Italian commode/chest of drawers from circa 1850, all hand-crafted from cedar that has taken on a deep mahogany tone which enhances the drama of the carved motif along the front. Look closely to see that the top surface is one solid plank, a remarkable feat of woodworking skill, that continues throughout this handsome case piece. The gadrooned pattern spanning the fronts of the three, wide drawers are mirror images of each other extending outward from the middle line. Inside the drawers one finds the most incredible decorative paper lining of heraldic lions and fleur-de-lis which may be a more recent addition but isn’t out of line with the style. An original lock is intact for the top drawer however no key is present. Note that the brass knobs vary slightly in their patterning but all have similar profiles to appear cohesive. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. The commode surface is inlaid in a geometric pattern leading inward to the center, which has developed a slight dip over time so please see the image gallery for more information. The case is composed of three drawers of geometric marquetry alternating light/dark designs to outline three raised panels which showcase the period hardware of laurel-wreath ring pulls and ornate escutcheons over the keyholes.
