French 19th Century Walnut and Oak Dropleaf Console

A beautiful patinated walnut and oak drop-leaf console table, made in 19th century France, easily converted to a small dining or center table as needed. The top planks are punctuated by large iron studs to bolt the hinges and an old “honest repair” in the shape of a small triangle among the honey-gold wood grain. To engage the leaves, one simply raises them from the folded position then rotates the apron panel to become the support. Each (short) side of the apron is carved with Arabesque curls which coordinate with the ogee profile on the edges of the leaf supports to form a cohesive look from every angle. Four turned legs carved with intermittent rings (like faux bamboo) support the top and are braced with perpendicular stretchers just above the floor. This table has been tightened, cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve its historic charm. Be sure to view the detailed images for the current condition.

A 19th century French farmhouse table, whose robust design is a practical solution for the modern kitchen to pivot between dining and preparation. The beech wood top is 2 ½” thick, already well-patinated so one need not worry about the quality of their knife skills. A single drawer in the apron which spans the full depth has the unusual but helpful feature of easily gliding forward and back to access the contents from either side. Projecting from the apron of the table on each short side are wooden pegs that could be gently used or appreciated as a unique decorative element. Thick, oak legs braced with an H-form stretcher support the mass of the table, which could be slightly raised to a more comfortable height as an island. The wood planks forming the top surface are arranged into three, nearly square panels for a sense of order and geometry complementing the fine grain patterns of the walnut. Within the deep apron, each long side contains six drawers where the sisters would have kept their dinner service. This is a great feature to benefit the modern interior as well, for storage that is ideally out-of-sight but convenient to retrieve. Three pairs of legs hold up the mass of the table that are turned and tapered in a stack of rings. Note that there is the expected patina of fine scratches, dents, and water rings adding to the historic character of the table. Each pedestal block rises from a stepped base using two, parallel slabs that form a narrow void in between which adds to the visual tension.
