French 19th century (or earlier) forged iron carrier for a taper candle in the middle and three small cages to hold glasses for wine or cider. Extending from the rods at the top is a flat handle to safely lift this metal contraption and set it out on a table. The simplicity of the form is part of the intrigue (removed from its original context), the piece could be adapted to many new uses around the home. French 19th Century Gilt Barometer

A fabulous French oval giltwood barometer from the 19th century, aligning with the style of Louis XVI. This early instrument of meteorology has been adorned with an extraordinary crest of ribbon and foliate motif, occupied by a small bird in the center. On the opposite end of the oval is a coordinating projection of similar leaf and ribbon design. The porcelain face has hand-painted numbers and lettering which describe the various weather conditions, indicated by a svelte “hand” mounted to the center of the dial. Here is a captivating addition to any space; this antique elevates a room’s status to the next atmosphere of style. Vintage Bible Illustrated by Endre Balint 1966

Vintage (circa 1966) La Sainte Bible illustrated by Hungarian artist, Endre Balint with text in French. This special collaboration combined the research and translation from École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem (an academic institution founded in the late 19th century) with the bold, modern style of Balint to produce a work that was engaging and approachable to read for a wide audience. The colorful supporting images bring the text to life through thought-provoking scenes which are a complete departure from any previous styles or schools of religious art but still very attuned to the emotional and spiritual weight of the verses. Condition is very good with some wear to the red leather-bound cover; the gilded edges of the pages have dulled; some foxing of the paper, otherwise the plates are still vibrant to enjoy. 18th Century Portuguese Altar

An exquisite work of 18th century Portuguese craftsmanship, this carved, painted, and gilded wood tabletop altar-niche would have been used to stage religious artifacts or statuary for display. Suspended from the red demilune crown is a highly-detailed carved finial like an artichoke with leaves forming a canopy, traced on the outer edges of the fascia with dentil molding and other patterns. The faux-marble backdrop enhances its rich visual depth (a classic expression of Italian and Iberian Baroque design) which creates movement, drama, and grandeur through elaborate ornamentation. Perhaps once part of a church interior, this niche was designed to enshrine a saintly statue, elevating its spiritual presence for one’s own devotion. 18th Century Portuguese Altar

A fantastic oratory or tabletop altar from 18th century Portugal, made of carved, painted, and gilded wood taking the form of a small cabinet (where religious statuary would be displayed). The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. Recreate your own sacred space with this handmade shrine, for regular devotion, reflection, or simply to showcase a personally meaningful object. A unique handmade fly catcher, mouth-blown from clear glass and dating to 19th century France. The basin at the bottom of the glass cone is meant to be filled with a small amount of sugar water to lure the flies in. Three square feet lift the vessel from the table for the flies to enter, whereas the opening at the top would have been corked to trap them in. French 19th century handcrafted bridal, wedding, or marriage dome on stand. The uniquely 19th century (Victorian period) tradition of a “globe de Mariée” involved a glass cloche or dome for newlywed couples to display and preserve mementos from their wedding and representations of their life together. Each example would have special and very personal meaning to the couple, such as flowers from the wedding bouquet, locks of hair from their children, and jewelery. At center is a red, tufted velvet seat surrounded by a gilt-metal garland of leaves on which a bird carrying a wreath is perched. Behind is a small mirror handpainted with little daisies plus two small mirrors on either side and below. A dramatic frame of carved mahogany found in the Netherlands, likely a 19th century architectural detail such as a transom above a doorway. This pierced window is without glass allowing one to fully appreciate the skilled carvings of talons punctuated with rosettes, closing around an unfilled oval cartouche at the center. The piece is symmetrical to mount vertically or horizontally as a decorative feature on the wall–or built in–as it was intended. Cleaned and polished with a paste wax. French 19th Century Culinary Scale

A 19th century French counter or grocer’s scale with two brass trays mounted on a white marble top. This wonderful antique instrument was used to measure various ingredients and products that are epicurean in nature. Of the two sizable brass plateaux, which have taken a lovely, antique patina, a line of stamps is visible on the right side confirming repeated visits to the mercantile from an inspector of weights and measures whose job it was to calibrate these weighing machines. The case is made of wood, angled at the corners (à la Louis Philippe) painted a beige tone with lovely craquelure texture, and revealing the porthole at center to see if scale is balanced.
