English 19th Century Glass Celery Vase
$250.009"H x 5.38"W x 5.38"D
Dimensions: 9” H x 5 ⅜” W x 5 ⅜” D
English circa 1860 handmade and etched glass celery vase. Before widespread refrigeration, celery was an expensive and exotic crop, necessitating a specialized type of vase to display the stalks as indicators of wealth. The tulip-shaped bowl of the vessel has straight, tall walls flaring out slightly at the rim. This example has been decorated with an etched illustration around the exterior (perhaps a stylized interpretation of celery or other foliate theme) giving it personality and flair even without a bouquet inside. A solid pedestal base elevates the vessel from a shelf or tablescape; note that due to the handcrafted nature it does have a slight lean. Dimensions: 13 ⅛” H x 10 ¼” W x 8 ½” D
A rustic French 20th century stoneware flagon or cruche, traditionally used as a bottle for transporting and storing liquids, such as olive oil. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salt glaze which creates movement across the ribbed surface of the bottle in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. For the modern interior this work of ceramic art is a wonderful artifact of culinary history to add to one’s collection or kitchen décor. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
