A gorgeous gold-gilt barometer from the beginning of the 19th century, France. This early scientific instrument was used to measure atmospheric pressure in order to better predict the weather. This antique piece has both a barometer as well as a thermometer. The thermometer has had temperatures recorded on its face from important events / records. The circular face is enameled, with its numbers and lettering all hand painted. The hand-carved frame has a flambeau form with carved laurel wreath, floral and crossed torches that are alit at the instrument’s top. It has been finished in wonderful gold gilt that remains intact today. Though this barometer is no longer in working order, on the wall it makes a commanding statement and provides an always-welcome touch of gold.
