French 18th Century Solid Wine Press Pedestal

This wonderfully aged 18th century grape press screw – from a winery in France – has been converted into a pedestal with a circular top and octagonal base added later. The shaft would have driven a large stone wheel downward, crushing and squeezing grapes, forcing out their juice as the stone rotates across them. The production of wine is tantamount to French culture, and these larger-than-life screws made producing it en masse a possibility. This antique press, with its deep, rich patina and exceptional texture could be used as column supporting art or a plant or repurposed as a stunning floor lamp. A large early 19th century French cheese draining board, hand-crafted in France circa 1820. This solid pine board with a shallow rim along the edges was used to drain the whey from cheeses as they were processed. Featuring scrapes and markings from years of use, the gorgeous wood grain of the aged pine matches the beauty of the all over patina. A small timber crack can be seen on the surface. A perfectly provincial culinary antique that is still wonderfully functional. There is no evidence of the top being attached to a base. This might be so the board could be easily cleaned after use. English 19th Century Maple and Co. Meat Platter

Dimensions: 21” L x 17 ¼” W x 2 ⅜” H
This stately 19th Century English porcelain meat platter features a scalloped rim, embossed deep draining channels, and is replete with basting well at one end. Raised upon integral feet to base. High gloss glaze overall with a decorative crane on the rim of the platter. On the reverse is the mark “Maple and Co. London” with imprinted numbering. Maple and Co. was one of the largest and most successful British furniture and decorative arts retailers in the late 19th Century. An additional imprint of a Caduceus, the registered trademark by Powell and Bishop, an English china and earthenware manufacturer (1876-1891) helps to date this piece to the Edwardian era. In excellent antique condition with minimal wear. This decorative serving plate of generous proportion is ready to display or serve today and will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
