French Late 18th Century Provincial Cherry Buffet
Dimensions: 44″H x 49″W x 22 1/2″D
A charming, hand-carved cherry buffet from the late part of the 18th century. This remarkable antique features wonderfully carved details on nearly every surface. The two drawers that can be found in the apron are decorated with a continuous half moon motif that runs in a track shape along their fronts. This same motif is seen on the buffet’s center style. The two doors have shaped panels and are hung on barrel hinges. Both the doors and drawers have working locks, with cut steel escutcheons that have been more recently added. The interior has a single fixed drawer and plentiful space for storing belongings. The buffet’s shaped skirt has also been decorated with crossed lines that form diamonds, each with tiny carved flowers inside, and a beautiful central shell cartouche. The solid cherry has a wonderful patina and has been fastened together using peg joinery. The piece rests on cabriole style feet.
