A French, 19th century Louis XVI style leather-topped desk with hidden extensions on each side to add surface area, in a dramatic ebonized finish. The olive green leather writing surface is mottled in patina creating organic patches of tonal variation, outlined in gold tooling of scrolling acanthus motif. The side leaves have some apparent wear in the leather, also emphasized with gold tooling. Three small drawers occupy the case: one wide drawer in the center flanked by two smaller ones that open by ring pulls, outlined in beaded brass trim which glows against the dark, ebonized finish. No key is present. The backside is finished and complete with the same brass trim as the front to float the desk in a room. Italian 18th Century Painted Console Table

An extraordinary parcel gilt and polychrome console table from Italy, circa 1780, which has miraculously retained its handpainted, stylized Neoclassical illustrations in green, yellow, and red. As if an artifact from Pompeii, whose rediscovery and excavations along with the town of Herculanaeum where shaping 18th century fashion, the table top features an illustration of a Greek-style vessel (krater) depicting a reclining male youth joined by a harpist to the left and a character with an offering of fruit to the right. Spanning the apron of the table is a repetitive line of palmette design in black over a pistachio-green background, which may be “lacca povera” – a type of decoupage that made works such as this more cost-effective. The tops of the square legs feature a geometric design in gold gilt–reminiscent of a Greek Key–before tapering to the floor. This antique console manages to span two millennia of decorative arts traditions (from the ancient world to the 18th century revival of them) and yet still feels original for the modern interior by its own artistic merits. The disc of “breccia pernice” type marble shows delightful patches of mauve and butter-yellow stone, complemented by a pierced brass gallery around the circumference. This timeless table design matches earlier bouillotte tables–made for playing cards–scaling the proportions down to coffee table size to fit a living room arrangement. There are two small drawers tucked in the apron, and two small leaves inset with tooled leather surfaces that emerge to hold perhaps a drink or hand of playing cards. The exterior of the apron is entirely inlaid with geometric marquetry in a chevron pattern bordered by a thin line of contrasting, twisted effect. This example has a shaped, white marble top that is slightly lobed at the front corners flowing in line with the gently arching splay of the two legs (the only legs meaning the piece needs to be secured to a wall for safety). An entanglement of floral and ribbon carvings decorate the bowed profile, which meet in the center of the apron as a pendant with a single flower.
