A fantastic English mahogany drop leaf table, made there circa 1840. The table has two large, demilune-shaped leaves that lay to the sides of the table when down. To expand the top and raise the leaves, the leaves are lifted, and the apron itself is hinged midway to swing out – with one leg attached – to create a 90 angle that braces the top, when up. This ingenious design is simple and effective and negates the need for additional table legs that can impede the knees and feet of seated individuals. Although the apron is deep, it does not interfere with knee clearance due to the generous overhang of the table’s top.
