Swedish Biedermeier Style Pair of Carved Birch Armchairs
$2,500.0033.75"H x 22.88"W x 22.50"D
Dimensions: 33 ¾” H x 22 ⅞” W x 22 ½” D
A unique pair of Swedish late 19th century/early 20th century carved birch armchairs, the style would best be described as Biedermeier hence the beautiful blonde wood frames with Neoclassical profile and saber legs that would fit with nearly all traditional to contemporary decorating styles. The upper handrails are carved with a highly technical twisted effect flanked by turned rings as the only decorative flourish on the otherwise restrained yet elegant design. Currently the seats are upholstered in a very worn, satin material of alternating stripes in sage-green and ivory which complements the luminous frame. At 18” seat height they easily adapt for dining or as occasional chairs in a living room setting. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair only.

French 19th Century Directoire Fauteuil
$2,800.0034.50"H x 21"W x 21.25"D
Dimensions: 34 ½” H x 21” W x 21 ¼” D
A majestic French 19th century Directoire fauteuil armchair in charming patinated finish that reveals at least three layers of different colors painted over the carved wood frame. The most recent color is a pale, buttery cream, blending with a stone gray, and where those have chipped off a pastel turquoise is exposed. Currently the upholstery is a linen or linen-blend hopsack in tan, outlined by a nailhead trim. A seat cushion is removable for easy maintenance which is in worn but good condition to continue using. Small rosettes decorate the arms and junction of the legs which have fine, turned rings to accentuate their svelte profile. It appears a crack on the chair’s right arm was professionally repaired, which is almost imperceptible under the textured paint. Swedish Biedermeier 19th Century Birch Armchairs
$3,200.0032.25"H x 21.63"W x 19.63"D
Dimensions: 32 ¼” H x 21 ⅝” W x 19 ⅝” D
A pair of Swedish Biedermeier armchairs from circa 1820 in birch that expresses the most extraordinary patterns (which occur naturally in the wood) but have been revealed by the skilled hand of the artisan. The rather square and restrained profile of the chairs is contrasted by the lyre represented on the splat, which incorporates thin metal rods as the “strings” for the instrument. Seats are currently upholstered in a heavyweight twill material of complementary faded brick tone that is in worn condition but acceptable to continue using. They are a natural seat height for dining, and generous in scale to incorporate as occasional chairs for a living room setting. Wood frames have been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the natural luster. Please view all the detailed images to see the current condition as they are an important part of the product description. Sold as a pair only.

Swedish 19th Century Carved Oak Dining Chairs – Set of Six
$2,995.0034.50"H x 19"W x 18"D
Dimensions: 34 ½” H x 19” W x 18” D
A fabulous set of carved oak Biedermeier-style chairs from Sweden, early 19th century, with soft cut-velvet seats to enhance the sense of refinement the period is known for. The curvaceous pierced back splat exhibits an openwork (stylized) palmette design below a thick upper rail carved with a diamond shape that is emphasized by natural darkening of the wood. The sage-green upholstery retains a luxurious and inviting touch (although a bit worn in places) both to the hand as well as when seated for dining and used around a game table. Internal structure remains firm and supportive. Note how the regal fleur-de-lis motif in the fabric has a rose-gold shimmer under certain lighting that looks celebratory for any occasion. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a set of six only.

German Pair of 19th Century Biedermeier Chairs
$1,255.0033"H x 19.50"W x 17.50"D
Dimensions: 33” H x 19 ½” W x 17 ½” D
A restrained pair of German Biedermeier side chairs of circa 1820 in that timeless combination of blonde wood and ebonized accents. The upper handrails have an architectural profile with a gentle curve and a line of ebonized pinstripe. A central splat, shaped to resemble a lyre, is topped with a panel of birds eye maple over three ebonized lines to suggest the strings of the musical instrument. Currently the seat upholstery is a plain black twill fabric that is worn but acceptable to continue using as the internal structure remains firm and comfortable. Joining the squared, tapered legs is a rather unusual crossed stretcher of thin strips that have been gracefully shaped. The wood frames have been gently cleaned and polished to reveal the natural luminosity and are ready to join your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.

Pair of Danish Biedermeier Armchairs
$3,200.0036.25"H x 23.50"W x 21"D
Dimensions: 36 ¼” H x 23 ½” W x 21” D
Danish, early 20th century pair of Biedermeier armchairs made during the reign of Christian X (1912-1947). The chair frames are crafted from satin birch with natural luminosity like gold to shimmer in the light, revealing fine grain patterns. A carved backrest incorporates the familiar “shovel” design of early Viennese Biedermeier chairs in a gently arching shape ending in exaggerated lobes, finished on the underside by a half-circle fan including angular ridges of a stylized scallop shell. Resembling a fauteuil, the graceful arms of the chair project forward in a gentle slope before curling inward. The front legs rise above the seat and are crowned with ebonized spheres where they intersect with the arms. Current upholstery of a cream and sage green striped sateen material is in fair condition showing a few stains but would be acceptable to continue using. Note the wood has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to reveal its brilliance. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.

French 19th Century Pair of Velvet and Fringed Parlor Chairs
31.38"H x 29.50"W x 30"D
Dimensions: 31 ⅜” H x 29 ½” W x 30” D
A delightful pair of 19th century French Empire/Napoleon III style “crapaud” chairs that are affectionately named after their resemblance to a toad but in the current vermilion velvet upholstery the effect is a bit more fabulous than amphibious. These examples have a low profile with rounded back–like a tub chair–complete with rolled arms and matching bullion fringe skirting the floor. As a pair they dress up any seating area, creating a cozy and inviting spot to converse or relax in an air of French luxury & sophistication. Internal stuffing remains a comfortable firmness, however there are several areas of wear to the fabric. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Sold as a pair.

French 19th Century Pair of Louis XV Style Bergeres
$3,995.0033"H x 27.50"W x 29"D
Dimensions: 33” H x 27 ½” W x 29” D
A luxurious and inviting pair of 19th century French Louis XV style carved oak bergeres with olive-gold cut velvet upholstery. The ivory-tone painted wood frames have worn in areas to expose the grain underneath, carved in all those sinuous lines typical of the Louis XV taste, complementing the expressive Damask floral and foliate patterns woven in the upholstery for a tactile experience all around. The comfortable seat interior, using removable seat cushions, is soft and deep to read or lounge, balanced on dainty cabriole legs accented with escargot feet at the floor. Note that some of the piping has come loose, a few nailheads missing, and fabric is abraded which in no way affects the comfort. Please view the detailed images to see the current conditions of these gorgeous bergeres. Sold as a pair only.

French Pair of Period Directoire Side Chairs
$1,895.0033.50"H x 17.63"W x 16"D
Dimensions: 33 ½” H x 17 ⅝” W x 16” D
A regal pair of French side chairs from the Directoire period (circa 1795-1800). The chairs have chalk-white painted frames now patinated to fine craquelure texture softening the symbolic, Neoclassical imagery carved in the back. Within the thick handrail one sees a stylized Greco-Roman urn framed by a diamond-shaped outline. In the splat is a (pierced) anthemion motif flanked by columns. Wide, flat seats are currently upholstered in a dark green velvet over natural stuffing. One chair has worn through to expose the horsehair underneath. Slender tapered front legs and sabered back legs have both order and a sense of lightness to fit anywhere. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Sold as a pair.

French 18th Century Louis XV Parlor Suite
$9,800.0037"H x 65.88"W x 25.50"D
Dimensions: 37” H x 65 ⅞” W x 25 ½” D
French, 18th century Louis XV period seating ensemble to instantly transform a parlor or living room into a grand “salon” with seven pieces: one camelback sofa, three fauteuil armchairs, and three (armless) side chairs. Upholstery of cut velvet in pale green–like a white jade–has been brocaded with tonal damask patterns, harmonizing with the botanical theme in the caved frames, and outlined in brass nailhead trim. The giltwood frames have patinated over the centuries to reveal the deep red bole underneath, giving definition to the sinuous, rococo curves accented with floral and foliate carvings positioned at strategic points for maximum effect. The thoughtful proportions of the seat interior (balancing the heights and depths) are all quite comfortable, with dense stuffing of horse hair or other natural material that remains mostly firm and supportive underneath the tight upholstery. The seat interior, firm and deep to read or lounge, is currently dressed in a printed cotton upholstery of pheasants and flowers, carried through the outside arms but the backside is plain linen. Dainty cabriole legs lift the chair from the floor. We recommend having the frame tightened when adding new upholstery. Dimensions: 33” H x 18 ½” W x 17 ¼” D
A handsome pair of carved oak George III style chairs from the 18th century. Look closely to appreciate the elegantly carved splats on the seat back and how they emulate the silhouette of Corinthian columns. Like most chairs of the Georgian period, the drama of the seat backs is balanced with generous proportions of the actual seats, which in these examples widen at the front and are carved with a shallow dip for comfort. Legs are mostly square and straight contributing to the overall solidity of the design both in a structural and visual sense.
