English Victorian book stand, circa 1900 invented by John Carter and patented as a “Literary Machine” that offers two adjustable components mounted on a brass rod: the small mahogany easel to prop up a book and the circular shelf below to place one’s drink, eyeglasses, candle, or other small items that would support the enjoyment of reading. The shelf is not only adjustable in height but also slides along a cantilevered rod and can be angled to a comfortable degree for viewing. Note the small lyre-shaped clip protruding from the top as another, thoughtful convenience. The tall brass rod is mounted on a cast iron base of four arched feet with ornate scrolled motifs. On the back of the book display is the original tag from the maker “Carters” with the address in London. This unique device has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the historic character. A pair of enormous 19th century French stoneware cruches traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine–now artifacts of culinary history to add to one’s studio pottery collection or décor. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salty glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surfaces of the bottles in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessels use integrated handles at the top to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth that would have been corked. One cork is present. A fabulous green glass hyacinth vase from Victorian England, late 19th century. The elegant vessel is shaped as a slender hourglass, decorated with a subtle ribbed texture. Originally designed to force small bulb plants to flower, today the transparency makes these wonderful vases and can be placed throughout the home for an added pop of color and texture. French Steel and Leather Handle Champagne Bucket

Falling somewhere in between a basket and a bucket is this enormous champagne chiller, forged in stainless steel with a brass label by Laurent Perrier, the prestigious French producer. The large handle–which is removable–offers a thoughtful leather strap for comfort and protection from the cold metal.
