This wonderful French tapestry from the 20th century is a reproduction of one of the most recognizable tapestries of the Middle Ages. The original, named “An Offering of the Heart”, was crafted in the 15th century by an unknown Flemish artist and is currently on display at the Louvre in Paris. Our reproduction has been dyed instead of traditional tapestry threadwork and is a much lighter alternative. The gracious lady and her man are dressed in royal robes and headgear suggestive of nobility. We see the man offering a physical heart to the lady, a display of chivalry- a common theme with Middle Ages art. French 19th Century Raised Embroidery of Madonna & Child
$2,800.0050.75"H x 36.13"W x 1.38"D
Dimensions: 50 ¾” H x 36 ⅛” W x 1 ⅜” D
An impressive work of textile art, this French 19th century raised gold embroidery of the Madonna & Child resembles liturgical vestments such as a cope or chasuble that a member of the clergy would wear to mass, applying the same techniques and quality to a more static image set within a wood frame. The appliqués are mounted on ivory silk with a moiré pattern that gives the illusion of faux bois, shifting and rippling in the light along with the metallic threads. Mary and the Christ child are rendered with handpainted faces and hands that achieve the kind of tenderness observed in Italian Renaissance art; they are wrapped in robes with a variety of textures & stiches to indicate the depth of gathered folds of fabric, including gold sequins, as she holds the child safely over the embroidered red serpent around her feet. The figural vignette is contained within orphrey or orfoi embroidered border of foliate and floral theme in gold, green, pale blue and red. Delicate, scrolling vines grow outward from the textile border across the negative space of ivory silk toward the ebonized, carved wood frame protecting the delicate work. French 20th Century Tapestry Cartoon with Iron Hanger
$2,850.00111"H x 54"W x 0.13"D
Dimensions: 111” H x 54” W x ⅛” D
Cartoons are the life size models painted onto canvas from which tapestries are ultimately woven by hand using these illustrations as a guide. This is a more recent example from the 20th century based on classic Verdure tapestry themes of lush foliage and romantic landscapes frozen in time. The printed canvas is in very good condition with a magnificent color palette enhancing the richly dressed nobleman on horseback. A wide tape-trim in complementary shades of bronze frames the textile, ready to hang by included iron rods for wall mounting. Please view the detailed images.
French 19th Century Framed Fox Tapestry
$4,500.0079.63"H x 58.75"W x 1.13"D
Dimensions: 79 ⅝” H x 58 ¾” W x 1 ⅛” D
A charming French 19th century verdure-style tapestry depicting a lush, pastoral scene where spring flowers bloom, lambs graze in fields while their shepherd rests, and a sly fox wearing a red robe observes from a distance. The central field uses a soft palette–mostly greens–to represent the rolling hills of this fertile landscape, where a modest farmhouse is seen along the treeline. The tapestry is bordered in a repeating pattern of gold acanthus leaves which unfurl over a background of salmon pink. This stunning textile is stretched and mounted on a wooden frame to hang on a wall to make an enormous impact on your room or space. Impressively sized, it draws the viewer into a wooded wonderland that prompts new traditions in retelling classic fables. This tapestry may be based on Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, the precursor to Little Red Riding Hood, originally written in France in the 17th century, perpetuating the allegorical figure of Reynard, a devious fox character with origins in the Middle Ages. Take some time to view the detailed images to see the current condition of the tapestry and wonder at its artistry and finer points.
French 16th Century Antique Aubusson Tapestry
$18,000.00110"H x 115"W x .25"D
Dimensions: 110”H x 115”W x 1/4″D
This 16th century Aubusson (French) tapestry is remarkably still vibrant and in wonderful antique condition. Its original border is completely intact and designed with florals, foliage, and avian imagery one would expect of the Aubusson/Verdure tradition. Tapestries were first created in the middle ages to hold in warmth in otherwise cold stone buildings, over the years they became practical traveling pieces of art & skilled craftsmanship. Most tapestries tell religious, mythological or hunting stories. Depicted here is a man who has been struck by Cupid’s arrow; the little cherub has set down his bow & quiver to tug insistently at his cloak as he leans into the embrace of a lady to the right while the dog looks on. Note the tapestry is lined on the back with canvas. Be sure to view the detailed images for a closer look at this incredibly beautiful tapestry and its current condition.
French 18th Century Tapestry Fragment
$1,200.0051.5"H x 27"W x 0.25"D
Dimensions: 51-½”H x 27”W x ¼”D
This vibrant botanical theme tapestry fragment comes from 18th century France, at the peak of the Verdure tradition. Two narrow panels were hand-stitched together as one hanging, with brilliant blue trim, that gives the works a diptych feeling for greater continuity in their narratives. The weavings show (expected) signs of abrasion and loss of pigment among the floral/foliate theme inhabited by the occasional bird. Make sure to view the detailed images to get a closer look at the condition.
