Italian 18th Century Painted Wardrobe
$6,995.0066.75"H x 45.50"W x 26.25"D
Dimensions: 66 ¾” H x 45 ½” W x 26 ¼” D
An 18th century painted wardrobe from northern Italy, displaying a particular Tyrolean-Germanic folk art style of marriage furniture, hence the charming illustrations to celebrate the happy union. The large, rectilinear volume of the wardrobe is enlivened by a grain-painted faux bois finish of energetic swirls and squiggles that long for more precious woods than the pine construction underneath. A wide door is paneled with two cartouches that enclose the polychromatic illustrations of garden urns overflowing with tightly composed floral arrangements. Forged iron hardware of working lock and hinges both inside and out are equally as expressive as the painted decoration. The interior is fitted with a top shelf that spans the full width and depth, over a brass hanging rod set 11” from the back which may not be original to the piece but enhances the functionality of the armoire for many storage needs around the home. Gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve every unique feature, this endearing piece of storage furniture is ready for its next home. A Dutch 19th century armoire covered in breathtaking flamed mahogany that has an expansive effect on the already appreciable scale. Deep shelves which range from 16 ⅝”-17” can be reconfigured as needed on sawtooth brackets to suit many rooms from clothing and linen storage to kitchen & dining organization. Note that each door needs to be completely open for the drawer in the base to slide out. This magnificent example of fine woodworking has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the natural complexion of the wood. Portuguese 18th Century Carved Solid Chestnut Cabinet
$9,995.0082.38"H x 56"W x 28.38"D
Dimensions: 82 ⅜” H x 56” W x 28 ⅜” D
A substantial carved cabinet from Portugal, 18th century if not earlier, made of chestnut wood that has been carefully transformed with reeded, geometric designs on the four doors. In a hybrid style known as “Mudéjar” the decorative arts of the period nodded to the Moorish presence in the Iberian peninsula and global influence from the colonies . Using just a single solid plank for each side of the cabinetry, the interior is divided into upper and lower sections enclosed by these gorgeous doors hung on forged iron hardware with working locks. The top cabinet offers a high, narrow shelf around three sides like a kind of mezzanine over a 22” deep shelf that fills the interior. Below that, to the right side, is a small tabernacle box whose door is also carved with the repetitive lines seen on the exterior doors. The lower cabinet has one shelf, approximately 48” wide x 22” deep. While this cabinet may be nearly 400 years old its solid construction and extraordinary craft would make an astounding addition to any interior. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve the historic character. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
French 18th Century Massive Louis XV Carved Armoire
$8,995.00102"H x 71"W x 27.50"D
Dimensions: 102” H x 71” W x 27 ½” D
Louis XV period (18th century) French solid walnut armoire with stylized carvings that trace the dramatic paneled doors and serpentine apron, giving this large storage piece its historic character. Below the straight cornice is a thin frieze over a pair of arched doors that mirror each other’s Arabesque outline around the paneling. A wide pilaster in between (an extension of the left door) is punctuated at the center by a quatrefoil design. The doors open by working lock and key to reveal three shelves ranging from approximately 20 ½” to 22 ¾” deep with the middle shelf latching to the left door for safety. Note that the dowel rod appears to be a more recent addition, giving one the flexibility of either hanging or folded storage. A shallow, wide drawer at the base uses handforged iron ring pulls to slide open and a very unusual escutcheon at the center shaped like a star. The sinuous lines of the swelled apron transition into short cabriole legs, another signature of the Louis XV taste for refined, yet playful touches. From its graceful curves to robust proportions and charming patina, this Louis XV armoire will bring a comforting presence to any home. It has been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax to be ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition.
French 18th Century Carved Oak Buffet à Deux Corps
$5,600.0095"H x 57.50"W x 20.38"D
Dimensions: 95” H x 57 ½” W x 20 ⅜” D
A stunning French oak buffet à deux corps (cabinet in two sections) from the 18th century, designed with features and style that suit many decorating tastes and storage needs for the modern interior. The rounded cornice softens the impressive scale and height of the case, seeming to rise on quarter-round fluted pilasters at the corners outlined in ribbon-twist carvings to frame two paneled doors. Another line of ribbon-twist carvings outline the different panels of the doors: a narrow foliate motif along the top sits over two rectangular panels given further definition by egg & dart carvings. The doors open by working lock and key to reveal an interior fitted with two shelves, 13 ¾” deep. In the base section–behind the locking doors–there is one shelf over two small drawers (like a linen press) measuring 17” deep. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax this antique storage piece is ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more.
Portuguese 18th Century Faux Bois Painted Cabinet
$9,995.0071.38"H x 59"W x 28.75"D
Dimensions: 71 ⅜” H x 59” W x 28 ¾” D
An exceptional Portuguese cabinet from the 18th century with faux bois painted exterior to mimic the exotic woods of the colonies, like rosewood and mahogany, that expertly captures their unique grain patterns and tone to become a unique work of art in the process. The top cabinet uses two, bifold paneled doors to enclose the interior, appearing as four narrow sections with dark, raised middle panels framed by contrasting “woods” in lighter tones. Each pair of doors has integrated bolts for vertically securing to the crown and bottom, plus a working lock fitted into the middle right door. Hidden in between the two bodies is a retractable shelf that slides out by two short knobs nearly imperceptible against the trim. In the lower body is a row of three drawers over a very wide drawer spanning the full width–all using wrought iron drop (lifting) handles to open. Note the middle drawer retains a working lock and key. For the modern interior the scale of this case piece is impressive alone, offering daily inspiration and fascination by the handpainted faux bois decoration to use for living and dining room storage, offices, or in place of an armoire. The cabinet has been cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain every unique feature. Please view the detailed images to see more. Two keys included.
French 19th Century Solid Oak Buffet à Deux Corps
$5,600.0099.75"H x 57.75"W x 24.75"D
Dimensions: 99 ¾” H x 57 ¾” W x 24 ¾” D
A French solid oak buffet à deux corps from the 19th century, Louis XV in style, with baroque carvings to add depth to the paneled doors, and serpentine apron that together give this large storage piece its historic character. Under the linear crown is a stylized garland carved into the frieze over a pair of doors that mirror each other’s calligraphic outline around the paneling. Each door hangs on steel barrel hinges to support the weight, and use scrolling hardware that coordinates beautifully with the vine and foliate motifs elsewhere. The doors open by working lock and (massive) key to reveal an interior that has been crudely tacked with the most charming floral printed cotton in bold red & white. Three shelves range in depth from 13 ¼”-14 ¾”. In the lower cabinet–protruding forward beyond the upper body–past a working lock and key is an interior fitted with a single shelf, 18 ⅜” deep. The same textile has been used to dress the back of the cabinet as well–see the image gallery for the immersive effect this has when all the doors are open! French 18th Century Louis XV Solid Walnut & Inlay Armoire
$11,000.00112"H x 71"W x 27.50"D
Dimensions: 112” H x 71” W x 27 ½” D
This French Provincial armoire from the 18th century is absolutely breathtaking in every detail. Stylistically the armoire reflects Louis XV taste, with a number of unexpected features that transcend time and place to still capture hearts and imaginations in the modern interior (that is, with the scale to accommodate such a monumental work). A classic bonnet-top cornice arches gently around the crown of the case over towering, paneled doors opening smoothly on steel barrel hinges. Tracing the curvaceous panels of the doors (and implied pilaster between them) is the most exquisite, pinstripe inlay of alternating dark & light wood tones with intermittent “checked” squares like a gameboard for a geometric counterpoint to the sinuous lines. One, very large key operates the locking right door and acts as a pull. The left door hooks from the inside to keep it in place when closed, fitted with an intricate iron crank to operate the vertical latch piercing the upper and lower part of the frame. Inside are three proportionate shelves, 61” W x 19 ½” D, for ample storage of clothing or linens. The center of the serpentine apron is marked with a “Kolovrat” icon, the ancient symbol like a spinning wheel that signifies movement, growth, the sun, and life cycle to bring luck and protection. Scrolling motifs morph into escargot-style feet that raise the piece from the floor. Note there is some loss to the apron just behind the front-left foot, please view the detailed images to appreciate all the special features of this remarkable antique armoire. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior.
