This Italian armchair from 1680 may look like a throne, in fact it is a wonderfully patinated example of a friar’s chair–historically referred to as a “ sillon de frailero” type of chair found in abbeys. The friar’s armchair was initially an Italian design and quickly became associated with Spain and the colonies after its introduction in the 16th century. This wonderful armchair from the 17th century has a tall and sturdy frame carved from walnut, stretching a thick leather backrest and seat which are secured by two rows of nailheads. As this was not necessarily a chair for comfort, the lines of the arms and legs are mostly flat and straight to encourage good posture. Wonderful craquelure patina covers the dark leather, while the wood grain is marked with dense patina from nearly four centuries of use. Swedish 19th Century Gustavian Style Painted Bench

A delightful Swedish bench from the early 19th century, this petite settee in the classic Gustavian taste for lightness and simplicity features a chalk-white painted frame. The bench seat has been wrapped in new upholstery of plain muslin, sheltered by a pierced seat back accented with stylized carvings to represent iris (the beloved fleur-de-lis of French royalty) framed by Gothic arches. The delicate splats are variably patinated; the farthest on the right arm shows a more recent repair (see the image gallery for more information). Four elegantly tapering legs lift the piece from the floor in a unified look from tip to toe. A fantastic pair of vintage Italian “Cesca” style armless chairs in the manner of Marcel Breuer. First presented in 1928, the design has become iconic of Bauhaus minimalism intersecting with a reverence for traditional craftsmanship. The gently curved seats and seat backs are made of tightly woven cane stretched between a frame of complementary beech wood left in its natural blonde tone, cantilevered on tubular chromed steel legs that form a continuous line to achieve an effect that is light in visual weight and mass. Expertly wrapped rush seats around the convex edges are still tight and in good condition with a few missing cords which does not affect the functionality. The oak dowel ladder-like construction of the legs remains strong, variably patinated over time. Italian Vintage Set of Four Ebonized Upholstered Armchairs

A very unusual set of four dining armchairs from Italy–1980s, the height of Postmodern and Memphis design– with stylistic references that go back to the late 19th century. The influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh is undeniable as the chairs are stylized, even architectural in their simplification of distinct geometric lines made even more pronounced by the sturdiness of the ebonized frames. At the top of the chairs is a crescent-shaped headrest narrowing to sharp points, rising from the splat of three parallel bars set at a comfortable recline behind the upholstered seats (currently in a sage-green chenille). Vertical legs at the front and sabered legs at the back are sturdy, rising up to half-moon armrests. Dutch Painted Parcel Gilt Settee with New Upholstery

A fantastic Dutch Regency style settee from the 19th century, recently updated with new upholstery to complement the painted frame with sections of parcel gilt trim. Wrapping the tight seat-back and wide bench seat is new upholstery of a soft, chenille texture printed with dense foliate imagery inspired by French Verdure tapestry. The cushions are held in place with brass hardware (knob latches) seen from the outside that lock the panels in place and can be easily removed for servicing or to change the upholstery. The cozy interior is outlined by the painted frame in a shade of green best described as “pistachio” enhanced with sections of parcel gilt. Four tapering legs carved in a faux bamboo silhouette (also ringed in gold) across the front and sabered legs across the back are sturdy on the floor. French 19th Century Massive Directoire Settee

This massive French Directoire 19th century fruitwood bench/settee is upholstered in a regal striped fabric of saffron gold & salmon pink. While the large scale might be generous and awesome, the construction in itself gives it the presence of authority to preside over a room without ostentatious symbols: the straight, rounded handrail is held together with a visible tongue-and-groove joint at the center and three pair of robust legs support the mass of the seat. A firm bench seat appears even wider by the railroaded stripes in vertical orientation across the upholstery, aided by a visual counterpoint that comes from a pair of matching bolster cushions which are finished on the ends in the figures of brass lion heads clutching rings! Swedish 19th Century Biedermeier Chaise

An expressive Biedermeier period chaise lounge–also called a “recamier”–dating to circa 1820 Sweden, in the manner of the famous maker Karl Johan. Resembling a gondola in silhouette, the left-arm rises from the corner to develop into an exaggerated wave with spiral (very much in the French Restauration taste for scrolled arms) before cresting again to make the lower arm on the right side. Maple wood, by its natural luminosity and elusive grain patterns, was an ideal choice in constructing the frame to underscore the sense of movement happening throughout. Currently the upholstery is a medium blue geometric jacquard that is in fair condition. Note there have been a few professional repairs made to stabilize the outer lobes of both arms but overall the frame is heavy and sturdy. Below the diamond-carved panels at the lower corners of the bench, robust turned feet elevate the frame as the final complement to the mastery in carving seen above. A majestic French 19th century Directoire fauteuil armchair in charming patinated finish that reveals at least three layers of different colors painted over the carved wood frame. The most recent color is a pale, buttery cream, blending with a stone gray, and where those have chipped off a pastel turquoise is exposed. Currently the upholstery is a linen or linen-blend hopsack in tan, outlined by a nailhead trim. A seat cushion is removable for easy maintenance which is in worn but good condition to continue using. Small rosettes decorate the arms and junction of the legs which have fine, turned rings to accentuate their svelte profile. It appears a crack on the chair’s right arm was professionally repaired, which is almost imperceptible under the textured paint. The rather square and restrained profile of the chairs is contrasted by the lyre represented on the splat, which incorporates thin metal rods as the “strings” for the instrument. Seats are currently upholstered in a heavyweight twill material of complementary faded brick tone that is in worn condition but acceptable to continue using. A fabulous set of carved oak Biedermeier-style chairs from Sweden, early 19th century, with soft cut-velvet seats to enhance the sense of refinement the period is known for. The curvaceous pierced back splat exhibits an openwork (stylized) palmette design below a thick upper rail carved with a diamond shape that is emphasized by natural darkening of the wood. The sage-green upholstery retains a luxurious and inviting touch (although a bit worn in places) both to the hand as well as when seated for dining and used around a game table. Internal structure remains firm and supportive. Note how the regal fleur-de-lis motif in the fabric has a rose-gold shimmer under certain lighting that looks celebratory for any occasion. German Pair of 19th Century Biedermeier Chairs

A restrained pair of German Biedermeier side chairs of circa 1820 in that timeless combination of blonde wood and ebonized accents. The upper handrails have an architectural profile with a gentle curve and a line of ebonized pinstripe. A central splat, shaped to resemble a lyre, is topped with a panel of birds eye maple over three ebonized lines to suggest the strings of the musical instrument. Currently the seat upholstery is a plain black twill fabric that is worn but acceptable to continue using as the internal structure remains firm and comfortable. Joining the squared, tapered legs is a rather unusual crossed stretcher of thin strips that have been gracefully shaped. Pair of Danish Biedermeier Armchairs

Danish, early 20th century pair of Biedermeier armchairs made during the reign of Christian X (1912-1947). The chair frames are crafted from satin birch with natural luminosity like gold to shimmer in the light, revealing fine grain patterns. A carved backrest incorporates the familiar “shovel” design of early Viennese Biedermeier chairs in a gently arching shape ending in exaggerated lobes, finished on the underside by a half-circle fan including angular ridges of a stylized scallop shell. Resembling a fauteuil, the graceful arms of the chair project forward in a gentle slope before curling inward. The front legs rise above the seat and are crowned with ebonized spheres where they intersect with the arms. Current upholstery of a cream and sage green striped sateen material is in fair condition showing a few stains but would be acceptable to continue using.
